The adventure is keeping them skinnier than I thought. I like a big thick backend, and while I’ve seen a few R1Ts driving from the other side of the freeway, I haven’t been able to touch or see up close any of them.

So I decided over the weekend to run over to a service center(Minneapolis) and they had about 30 trucks it appeared and a few R1S. I’m an R1S preorder holder myself so was excited to see it up close, and so was my wife. The spoiler alert is.. seeing it in person cost me $$$ as I am ditching the 21s which are so incredibly ugly and going with the 22s.

Overall, while we were happy with the look.. I’m very surprised about how thin the back is. I could basically wrap my arms easily around the whole thing which makes me wonder how cramped it may feel in there or if the looks are deceiving. Time will tell, our order is due in 3 or so months if all goes well, but curious on anyone’s thoughts that are used to midsize SUVs? This R1S bills itself as full size, but in comparison it wouldn’t be even close to the competition where every inch matters in this space.

Have you seen the 21's without the covers? They look great. I'm also a bit confused on the thin part, as the Rivian is a wide vehicle.

Those inches matter on a trail too but in the opposite way this is much larger than my old Tacoma. But when I get home I will have to take a picture for you of the R1 next to my H1 thick boy.

Not sure where you got this impression, Rivian has never stated that and most reviews place it on the large end of mid-size. Statements from Rivian have indicated it is comparable in size to an Explorer.

Go sit in a ridgeline. The interior space feels pretty close. If the ridgeline is too small, you won’t like the R1T. If you’re okay with the ridgeline, the R1T will impress you.

Ive owned full size, midsize, and compact trucks. R1T is right-sized for my needs, right now. The interior isn’t as cavernous as a full-size but I can actually park this thing down town!

The R1S is 82" wide.

In comparison, its wider than nearly all its competition.

For example an Explorer is 78.9" wide.

It's even wider than a Tahoe or Suburban.

I realized just how much of a BOA my R1T has when I first tried to back it into the garage. Those rear haunches are THICCCCCCC

edmunds.com is a good place to compare dimensions for various vehicles, but it's good to cross check their numbers with another source if possible.

I traded my new(ish) RAM 1500 for the R1T. Dimensionally, it's only about 3" narrower (w/o mirrors) but the bed height looks about the same which probably contributes to the "thin" look.

It’s not wide at all, she’s got thick hips but I’ve never been able to wrap my arms around an SUV. I ain’t Shaq, it’s very odd.

Its only because of the fenders. Provides seemingly no interior benefits and visually side by side I can’t wrap my arms around a Tahoes rear end.

I would never have ordered the R1T, I got the S. I own 21 3rd gen Raptor, Model S and Subaru Ascent so I safely can say I know the size comparisons well and visually what stands out. The R1S has a tiny rear end.

I have owned similar vehicles and I agree. But if I lived rural I would prefer a full size pickup. For people liking full size the Lightning must seem like a considerably better value.
