A heavy sliding toolbox would have dented any bed, except other beds would have been metal, and require bodywork to fix... The panel damage here hides the tonneau, which must be accessible. Secure the load. Hard lesson learned but not the truck's fault.

EDIT: Wording clarity.
Completely agree.

This is why truck makers should leave bed liners to the aftermarket. Would you care as much about the damage if it was an easily replaceable aftermarket liner?

On a similar note, As this is my first truck, I made the mistake of driving around with something not tied down that slid around and scratched up my bed pretty bad (lots of white lines). Is there any way to like buff the scratches out of the plastic or use some kind of black tinted cleaner to make it less visible?
Depending on the polymer mix a heat gun does wonders to restore many automotive plastics
I use it all the time on old jeeps
Does a good job removing gashes and sun fading

Funny, I was just thinking about trying this if I can pop that panel off. Still not sure if those oval holes are panel slots or drains.

I’m still in max pack res limbo so hopefully it works for you and by Q72023 when I can get the truck they have a more robust option

Replies to OP in this thread just shows how many R1T owners were never truck owners. Granola munching on full display. That tool box should not damage the bed like that. Hopefully Rivian takes early feedback and revises future builds for some durability.

Pretty disappointed with this one. I went to do some work at one of my rentals and had a bunch of gear, including my tool box, in the bed of the truck. Due to the slick nature of the plastic in the bed, I knew some sliding would be inevitable. Anyway, it did slide around and when someone cut me off, the tool box slid into the the fore section of the bed. I heard it, but thought nothing of it. It wasn't until I got to the spot and took everything out that I noticed that damage had occurred. This is not acceptable for what was should have been a non-issue. Sure, I could have put the tool box in the back seat, put some anti-slide material in bed, or whatever, but this is a luxury, "durable", work and play truck. I've had 7 or 8 trucks over the years and have had FAR worse in-bed impacts with zero damage. The pictures speak for themselves. I could be wrong, but I think those oval holes are drains and not snaps as the panel (with Rivian logo) is secured by bolts behind the round covers you see.

My F150 truck bed is pretty thrashed along with the flip fold lid, and have had such a crazy variety of loads in there.
It's a steel bed, I think the aluminum ones are more sensitive to damage.

I have the folding bed divider and it was the best factory option ever, prevents things from sliding around. I would like in-floor tie down points, but I never travel without some sort of tie-back or racheting straps.

Secure load is a safe load, and you never know what stunt some driver will pull in front of you that you'll have to evade or stop fast!

not mine but the same;

Oh look, comments blaming OP. As they say in other forums, "victim blaming". A truck should be able to do truck things. I've had toolboxes slide around in my Chevy for 200,000 miles and never had this kind of damage. Hard to judge scale from the picture but what could that toolbox weigh? Maybe 20-30 lbs., at most? Seems like he's taking it in stride, but is still very disappointing. ?

I'm still holding out that someone will release an EV work truck sometime in the next year or so. ??
If someone points out that a person’s action or inaction resulted in a problem without any other living thing or external force being involved then I don’t think that’s blaming the victim.

You could be a victim of a bear attack, a drive-by shooting, a burglary, an assault, a landslide, etc.

I don’t think you get to claim victim status for tripping because you failed to tie your shoes, cutting your hand because you dropped a knife and tried to catch it, or losing $1,000 dollars because you accidentally included the cash envelope with the bills you’re shredding.

I don’t know if other people see it that way or not, but I don’t think of myself as a victim when I’m the only living thing or force involved. That’s just me making a mistake and I do my best to learn from it.

edit: missed some words

I'm not going to debate this with you. Just my opinion, but if I spent upwards of $80,000 on a *truck* I would expect that I could put a 20 lb. plastic toolbox in the bed and drive a few miles without it smashing the bed all apart.

If it does that with a tiny toolbox how's it supposed to hold up under a load of "adventure gear" or whatever it is they claim these things are designed to haul, while off-roading? It's a poor design. You may be happy with the construction of the bed, but for the money it costs and the way the vehicle is marketed I would expect it to be more durable. 02 cents. ?‍♂

I completely agree that it’s a poor design since it is highly likely that someone tossing 2x4s, bricks, logs, etc. into the bed could do the same type of damage. I think the issue with the design is that they had to make the plastic (composite?) bed in such a way that the forward end is a separate piece. Worse, at first glance it appears that the design relies on plastic tabs sitting in relatively small plastic slots to keep the pieces together. The good news there is that if anyone knows how to disassemble and reassemble the front bed pieces hopefully it’ll just snap back together.

I am not saying that OP isn’t worthy of sympathy, either. None of us wants our brand new vehicle to get damaged no matter what the cause.

I don’t expect you to change your mind but I respectfully disagree about the victim classification, and extending that to victim-blaming. What I wrote after suggesting a fix in my original post, “Whether in a pickup or an SUV I always tie down heavy cargo.” wasn’t meant for OP as much as for anyone else reading this thread who is new to truck ownership. I owned a truck for years and always secured everything I placed in the bed because I was taught that gravity wasn’t the only force acting on whatever is in there. I didn’t want something light flying out and causing a hazard for other drivers and I didn’t want anything heavy damaging my truck or potentially becoming a projectile in the event of an extreme maneuver. I’ve seen both things happen to other people and I don’t want to be THAT guy.

Pretty nice, but always felt like spray in is much better. I'm cautiously optimistic that at some point someone will figure out a good way to do that without sealing the spare tire area or covers for air compressor, etc. ??
I’ll be using herculiner when mine comes. Can spray it but can also be applied with a roller and brush. I assume the spare tire lid can be removed? So I was planning to pull it out to paint it. I’ve used this stuff to spray the box of my dads side by sides and it’s a nice rubbery gritty surface. We had some over spray go onto my dads ax when we sprayed his first side by side (he wasn’t too concerned about masking near the tail gate. ) and he loves it that way as it makes it easier to hang on to when using it while sweating.

This stuff.

None specific to Rivian yet that I know of, but someone found a generic one from Amazon worked well. And one of the site sponsors, @BestEvMod(AOSK) said they were working on one designed for the T. So s00n, as usual :giggle:
Rivian R1T R1S Damage in truck bed from my tool box d93bbcbd02f92f04de6f170762b8026

yes, and we designed a foldable line so you could access the bottom stuff easily.
but we are still working on the design of the pattern(want to make the shape of it same as the rivian ridge, so that this mat could sit flush.
once we finish the design, we are going to start making molding for it. it shall take around 20 days.
and one month on the ocean cargo. We are expecting this to be available in December.
