Can't blame you for being miffed. I am too.

As far as new tech in a 2024 Rivian R1T Max Pack, I doubt it. They have only made 15,000-20,000 vehicles in their whole history. They probably need to make another 50,000 vehicles before they invest in new engineering and new manufacturing.

Although, they use electric motors made by Bosch. And the batteries are made by Samsung SDI. So the question is, can Samsung and Bosch change the design(s), and not charge Rivian a megaton to do that? It would probably be cheaper for all to just keep the engineering all the same for another 12 months.
You're behind on the news. Need to read up on what they've been working on re: batteries and motors.

Oh well. This may be the end of Rivian for me. I'm going to buy a Colorado Z71 or ZR2 very soon. I'll keep the reservation for my quad motor max pack, but who knows if I will go ahead with it when available if I like the Chevy. It's just a truck. I drive a 2010 4Runner, so I will sell that and the Colorado likely going to be a massive upgrade for me anyway.

Inflation could make OG pricing look even better in 2024. Falling battery prices could make OG pricing less attractive in 2024.

I won't take a refund even if I buy another vehicle. The order could look great in 2025 when quad max finally delivers.
Exactly

I'm just shaking my head in disbelief.

we went from a jan 2022 delivery date (for a max pack ordered in summer 2020) to 1h2023 and just now it changed to jan-dec 2024. that's a 2 year slippage (assuming it delivers jan 2024).

How far are you? I am >3 hours from a service center and both of my orders got an update.
I don't think it's purely distance, it's distance and capacity. If you're 3 hours from a high capacity/low utilization SC, you can be fine vs. someone 1.5 hours from a busy one.

Pretty early in queue for Silverado EV 400+ mile and also not ruling out the CyberTruck. South Dakota winters can be brutal and we definitely want to tow a camper so I'm not getting anything under a 400 mile truck. Probably good for all of us to see the other options by then. Maybe what they are hoping for considering they will likely take a hit on each of these.

I think all the Max Pack preorders deserve an explanation from Rivian at this point. If it isn't going to be the new 2nd gen 800V architecture with Enduro motors I'm not sure I'm going to wait that long to get one.
I got a reasonable explanation around why it is taking so long back in April when I did a 1st Mile drive (I was originally a Max Pack preorder, but decided to switch). The issue is charging speeds. What the R&D department needs to figure out is how to make the Max pack economical from a charge time perspective. As it currently stands, with 0-20% and 80-100% being at a much slower rate, you are essentially no worse off stopping more frequently with the Large Pack battery because the extra ~20kwh at the slower speeds will greatly increase your charging time.

I don't have the exact math in front of me, but the explanation made sense. Totally get that it sucks to wait even longer, but it would probably suck even more to have the Max Pack and still get beat to a destination on a road trip by a Large Pack due to charging times after paying the $10k premium.

Huh? I'm confused. What makes you think this will charge slower than the regular pack?

"working on" or have in production?

Also, as far as I know, Bosch still makes their electric motors, and Samsung the batteries. As of today.

YES, Rivian is making plans to eventually make their own batteries "in house", and plan to go to LFPs. Although, I hope it is not at their proposed Georgia plant because they just lost a court ruling in Georgia that could delay things there.

I don't know if Rivian can make better batteries than Samsung. Hope so, but Samsung has a lot of experience doing it.

RJ said they are doing the motor production in Normal. Sounds like the line is in pre-production validation already.

No idea about the LFP batteries.

There is a charge curve for all EVs. There is a thread here about it. The vehicle will charge slower at very low SOC and high SOC. Since it is related to percentage, there is more "ground" to cover with a larger battery back. So if it is slower charging from 80% to 100% but is only adding 20% to 135kwh in the Large Pack vs 20% of 180kwh in the Max pack, it will take more time. Now double that for 0% to 20%.

I was not saying the Max will charge at a slower rate compared to the Large, just that it will take significantly longer due to the battery size.

I'm just a reservation holder...and when I plopped down my place in line, the estimate was H22023 - a year from now.

I hope that whenever the configurator opens for me they have some indication in is as to lead times.

Who knows though...

I have no problem with Bosch making the electric motors.
(see the recent MUNRO LIVE breakdown of the Rivian electric motors...they were impressed with some of the design elements)
And I have no problem with Samsung making the batteries.

Both Bosch and Samsung are good at what they do, and have a lot of experience. I understand Rivian wants to improve their margins, so long term, assuming they get the engineering right, it makes sense financially to build more in house. Hope there are no teething problems when they make the switch.
