New Orleans (Louisiana does restrict direct sale of tesla but we have a service center. I have a 2018 model 3 which was a very early delivery. Tesla supported that vehicle, which also had numerus small issues, with mobile service. didn't get the service center here until 2020)
April 2019 pre-order
R1T adventure (original max pack but changed to large pack over a year ago)
GW/OC/21's
Original window July-Sept 2022
Didn't get the June email so no window
promised window by end of summer
Promised window by end of Oct
NOW: Processing Estimate
Infuriating. To be lied to over and over and make no mistake the failure to provide a window after explicitly being told you will get your window are straight up lies.

Tesla barely survived the production ramp and I can tell you they made none of these types of errors during that crucial phase of model 3 production. This does not bode well for Rivians future.
Another New Orleans area preoerder here as well. Dec 21

I know Tesla is currently in a lawsuit with the state over it's direct sales laws. Rivian may be waiting it out to see what happens.

Placed my Order for an R1S in July 2021. Went through the same circus as others, i.e.
  • "upgrade package to get earlier delivery date",
  • "delivery date expected any day now",
  • "fiasco w/ price increase scare then decrease based on blowback",
  • "confirm order & sign purchase agreement" to secure $7,500 FED credit
  • "option selections changed/removed w/o notice",
  • and now "Processing Estimate" email/status as they let us know that proximity to Service Center (SC) is more important than packages, order dates, etc.
I'm in Charlotte, NC and I've seen references to "laws" that may be preventing deliveries .. not sure what laws we're talking about since:
  1. Tesla has been in the state for some time and has a SC here in CLT (they did have to "fight" to be able to sell direct .. 7 yrs ago .. we bought a 2020 MY in the midst of COVID shut down and still managed to get the car in 5 months.
  2. A month ago we took delivery of a Lucid Air (sold by Lucid directly to us - ordered in May).
  3. Lucid SC (Tysons Corner,VA) is farther away from us than 2 of the Rivian SCs (Atlanta and Richmond)
  4. There are a number of R1Ts that have been already delivered in NC (and a handful right here in Charlotte)... why would they not require a nearby SC ??
I'm beyond ticked off as we've put off replacing our SUV for over a year and don't even know when, if ever, we can expect delivery (2023? 2024? 2025? +)

In the meantime, our latest EV purchase (Lucid Air, ordered in May 2022) was delivered in 4 mos. from order (well w/in the 2-5 month estimate we were given) and at this pace, the Fisker Ocean One (ordered in April 2022 which begins manufacturing on Nov. 17) may be here before the R1S graces us with an estimate. Ridiculous!

So most people have now received an updated delivery date. Some are happy, some are...less happy? As it's been said, it tough to start up a new car company, and yes Rivian has made some unforced errors along the way. I am still hopeful that the wait will be worth it.

But there is also a new group of people here who do not have a delivery window. The "processing estimate" people.

So I am trying to get an idea of why some people get this message. Is it just far from Service people? Just R1S people? Just certain configurations?

So if you are a PEP (you down with PEP, yeah you know me), and you want to share: let us know your order date, configuration, and location.

Thanks
So, Gavin, we are in NM too--when did you originally reserve? We just did this July, so I am thinking we won't see an R1T until 2024. Haven't yet moved to order status. We are near Santa Fe.

8/31/2021, but Rivian has me at 9/1/2021. I guess my deposit took a day to process :)

Raleigh, NC, but switched to Chicago (family lives there - ) to help possibly expedite delivery.
R1T LA Silver, Max Pack, Ocean Coast, had powered tonneau but switched to manual last week. Standard wheels and other options.
Ordered 3/11/2022 (yup days after the price increase).
delivery window rec’d yesterday - jan-Dec 2024.

I’ve seen more Lucids in Raleigh than Riviians for what it’s worth. Crazy.

One pattern I've noticed in the responses to this thread is that many of those in "processing" have OC or FE interiors. Also true for an irl friend with an R1S FE who's since changed their config.

I had the max pack and the 2024 estimate. Switched to large pack and now it says processing estimate. Not sure how long it’s going to take to get a new estimate.

the email I received said that they'll update my "Processing Estimate" IN January 2023 (not "by January 2023", "in January 2023" ... )

Did you change your configuration and then get the processing estimate? Or did you get that originally?

The last time I changed my configuration was in January (2022) when I was told that if I added the more expensive package (Adventure) and didn't ask for Ocean Coast interior (I have black mountain) I'd be given an earlier delivery date. In April I was told my delivery was scheduled for the first half of 2023.

When I got yesterday's email it stated "Processing Estimate"

This is really an endorsement to the strength of the dealership model And a capitulation of the direct to consumer model. Really, of those here who live in NC, LA or other protectionist state, do you think the dealership protection laws will change anytime soon? If Rivian stands by this new criteria for delivery then face it - we are not going to get our trucks for years.

I am not really blaming Rivian. I am surprised it took this long for them to learn this lesson. Still, I think Rivian will be forced, financially, to do minimal business in our states.

This begs the question, however, what is their strategy when their customer with an R1T who lives in Denver moves to Charlotte, NC?

Probably the best strategy for those who insist on getting an R1 in areas far removed from a SC is to lie about their delivery address.

Not sure what "protectionist" laws are still in place in NC.

Tesla fought that battle 7 years ago and I've had no problem purchasing a Tesla direct from Tesla.

More recently (May 2022) I ordered a Lucid Air GT and it was delivered in Sept. 2022 with no problems whatsoever.

I've also seen a handful of Rivian R1Ts (which, according to the delivery tracker, were sold in NC)

Furthermore, Rivian has known my location (NC) from the beginning ... including in April 2022 when they sent me the "first half of 2023" delivery schedule email (attached).

Lastly, I wasn't given an option to change my delivery location, which is something I would consider.

Canadian here. October '21 reservation. RIT/El cap/OC/20's. Previous estimate was "first half of 2023".

The email I received last night from Rivian states "The delivery window estimate in your Account has been temporarily set to “Processing new estimate” as we finalize plans for when we’ll have a Service Center in your area."

Oh boy. I doubt I'll ever have a Service Centre closer than 3.5 hours away.

From what I have gathered here and other places. NC is one of many states that banned direct to consumer vehicle sales. THis is common knowledge. However, Tesla was a first mover and established service centers in the state prior to this ban. In fact, the legislation in many states was IN RESPONSE TO Tesla. The current Tesla facilities are grandfathered but no more can be built.

Furthermore, 8 states, North Carolina being one, banned servicing any vehicles by a manufacturer that does not have a dealership license.

I can not explain the actions of Lucid.

My guess is that it is Rivians experience with servicing vehicles in areas just like Charlotte that are exactly what led to this “processing estimate” policy. They just don’t want to do it anymore.
