The optimist in me thinks this isn't the case. GM is bringing out 2 400+ mile trucks and supposedly the Cybertruck is still coming with similar range. Rivian will need to have max pack to compete with them. As far as development challenges, there's good reason to assume Rivian doesn't want to release a 400V truck with a 180 kWh pack due to slower charging times. If you look at the Hummer EV, it's capable of 350 kW charging with a 212 kWh battery. Being limited to 220 kW for a very short period of time wouldn't be great when at least the GM offerings will be 800V and over 300 kW. We also know that Rivian plans to release the Dual Motor + Max Pack configuration by summer 2023, which means 800V and in-house Enduro motors. We also know from past quarterly investor calls that Rivian has been testing the Enduro motors / drive units for around six months now in the EDVs in a single motor configuration. So it's probably safe to assume they don't have any two motor Enduro drive units in testing yet, given the new 2024 timeline. If they announce more details on the Dual Motor Max Pack truck and it happens to have a locker at least in the rear, I'd consider trying to change to that configuration if it meant getting a truck sooner. But given that I want max pack to tow, I'm not currently willing to drop back to a large pack.
I think those points are valid albeit very speculative. I'm basing my opinions, just that, on what has transpired in the past 4+ years of waiting. I should clarify that max pack and 4-motor is the config that was marketed. DOWNGRADING to a dual motor and vocalizing future visions of a 800V battery pack is smoke and mirrors to detract to the REAL issue. Keeping your promise to Max pack adventure res holders would be too much of a loss.

I’m skeptical that GM or the CT will have a 400 mile range anytime soon. Not until demand slows. 300 miles seems to be the minimum for consumers and with years of preorders there is little reason to make a 400 mile version now. I don’t think we see a 400 mile truck until 2026 or later.

My guess is simply that they want to push MaxPack pre-orders to Large Battery or Dual Motor to minimize their losses.. they lost the most margin on Max pre-orders, have enough demand for Large, it’s easy to simply squeeze them (us) a bit.. it’s the Dual-Batt-MaxPack coming before the promised original is why I think this scenario.. Rivian is going out of its way to squeeze the MaxPax quad pre-orders.

Ordered R1S 11/21. Messed around with the color and wheels pretty much once a week until early October. Not sure I can wait this long but the date is not a surprise to me:
Rivian R1T R1S Max Pack delayed to 2024 according to configurator / email ? 2D84EB6C-A748-47BC-9746-73E12272615C

Well, I'm glad I, reluctantly, went with the Large Pack from the shop vs. my original Max config (had everything I wanted except for 20" ATs). My friend who ordered two R1S's & and an R1T in 2019 was spot on when he guessed 2024 for Max Pack about a year ago. It sucks for everyone who was holding out on the Max, but it will be best in the long run for the longevity of the company and its customers, IMO.

2024 is just when they’ll announce the next delay, going on current track record

There’s some interesting (and vague) discussion about the max pack here with Tony:

Tony suggests that the max pack is not going to just be a larger version of the large pack. There will be some fundamental differences between them, which many may take to mean 800V architecture.

If I had to guess, the max pack isn’t actually going to work with the current Bosch sourced motors. It will only work with the Enduro motors that are coming. Since the dual motor variant has been moved up to summer 2023, so have dual motor max pack deliveries. The quad motor versions are possibly going to be quad motor enduro versions, NOT the current quad Bosch motors.

Now for why the quad Enduro would be delayed, I don’t know. Maybe that requires extra engineering they are ready for yet. Maybe they have an agreement with Bosch that requires they order a minimum number of motors or use them for a minimum amount of time.

I know people are disappointed but I’m holding out hope that those waiting for quad motor max pack vehicles are in for some good news eventually and that they will receive more advanced trucks than those of us who have already taken delivery.

I give it 80% odds that there's a 400 mile Silverado EV in my driveway within 10 months.

I probably could’ve handled further delay if Rivian would’ve demonstrated having any semblance of a plan to deliver vehicles to here, and not said at various stages
1)delivery should be 2023! 2)wait no we’ll tell you in October! 3)the timeline is indefinite and we’ll remind you in January!

Folks who are new to EV really can't grasp the total impact of battery size and distance. Loss due to AT tires, loss due to extreme temps and range anxiety due to lack of charge stations. I've been driving my model s since 2013 and have personally driven 208k miles on same battery. The need for 400 mile pack to go outdoor adventuring in cold climates is absolutely necessary. That's why we have been patiently waiting . shook hands and spoke with RJ at the LA autoshow in 2018, and he seemed very genuine about bringing this model to market. Fast forward 4 years later.. actions speak louder than words. It's not that they can't, it's that they WONT. Their loss would be too great- the big lie.

For all those trying to convince us max pack reservation holders that we don't need a max pack for road trips, I do genuinely appreciate your thoughts, but unfortunately I'm not just planning on doing charger to charger road trips.

I want to be able to load my R1T with a bunch of un-aerodynamic accessories, it'll have the AT tires, it might be cold up here in Canada. I also consider the last 10% of battery capacity to be a safety buffer. Factoring all that in, I wouldn't expect to get more than 200 miles out of a large pack during winter.

If you exclude any usage while camping, that means you can venture about a 100 miles out from the nearest charger. I'm aware a max pack, under the above conditions, would only add 20 to 30 miles to that - but I'll take anything I can get.
