Nuclear is something people who know nothing about nuclear power generation point to, to sound smart. ...and I say this as someone who routinely works with nuclear power plants developing their emergency response planning.

Nuclear is going out of business organically because they can't profitably generate the power without major government subsidies. The age of the people working in the regulatory apparatus for these plants are mostly over 60; You can say "nuclear" until you're blue in the face, but it just isn't gonna happen; the talent pipeline largely just doesn't exist anymore.

Sort of like solar, wind and oil industries that are all also subsidized?

They wouldn’t, if the general public’s education on nuclear power caught up with the reality of nuclear power instead of using media sensationalism.

The public doesn’t decide whether a nuclear power plant can purchase insurance. Insurance companies do.

...to say nothing of the fact that insurance companies and plant owners have no intention whatsoever of ever paying out any claims that arise.

They'll sell the plant to a purposefully undercapitalized shell company with no assets to create a liability shield. Its precisely what Exelon has done with the decommissioning of Three Mile Island to shield themselves from decommissioning costs. Eventually taxpayers will have to pay those bills---just a matter of time.

Fresh out of college I worked as a field engineer for Bechtel Power Corp SFPD on a nuclear construction project. I have a soft spot for nuclear, but IMO it's still questionable as to whether SMR is going to reach critical mass (pun intended) economically, even if the public grows to accept it.

I have no problem with research and development , but until they've got the goods on a cleaner cheaper and safer nuclear alternative that isn't forever 5 years away, call me "skeptical."

It’s going out of business because the industry sat stagnate with little development and advancement due to government over regulation. There are plenty of ways forward with nuclear power if people are actually committed to reliable clean power sources.

I finished installing the update and my range and range estimates for all the modes are exactly the same, which is not what I was expecting based on the release notes and EPA rating.

After installing the update I went out to the truck to check the release notes and while sitting there my range went from 193 to 195 in AP @ 69% SoC.

Sometimes over regulation in the result of prior under regulation. Read up on Three Mile Island. Thats what directly caused a lot more regulations and ovesight. Or Davis Besse and its vessel head degradation. Any business is going to cut costs wherever they can. Some of those businesses more so than others. I am not anti-nuclear, I worked at a nuclear plant for 7 years, but I do have open eyes to why some of those regulations are there.

After the update my 70% went from 194 miles to 214. I think it may have gone back to thinking the 21s are on the truck. When I first swapped to 20s, they updated the software accordingly, but the range estimates never changed. Last update they fixed it to be correct. Now it’s apparently broken again

I worked in the PV industry for twenty years. Initially, I would receive a number of inquiries from potential customers who were interested but “wanted to wait until the the panels were 50% efficient”. After some discussion about the theoretical maximum efficiency, I would tell them that if that was their approach to most technologies, they would never purchase a computer, car ,etc. Americans have difficulty wrapping their head around incremental change. Most believe that these thin happen in one fell swoop. So it is with the future of energy production. There are many options now, including geothermal. Hopefully it will get sorted out “correctly “. I believe that by 2024 renewables (depending on how you define them) will out-power coal. This is kinda like waiting for delivery of R1T…..
