I need to remove my seatbelt when reversing into a specific (frequent) spot so that I can get the right elevated angle for clear direct vision of my path... but the car seems to try to put itself into park sometimes. I can't find anything in owners manual about this. Anyone here know how the car handles this?

Don't lift your weight off the seat.

It senses an unoccupied drivers seat and puts the vehicle in park.

Use your mirrors. It’s a much safer way to back up anyways.

Yeah, I'll continue to try the new stuff but (1) nothing better than your direct eyeballs and (2) it's been raining and the cameras are blotchy and the mirrors and windows have droplets so I'm double-obstructed BUT the rear wiper works great and I have a clear view that way IF I stand up a bit. There are fundamentals of the tech that aren't good enough yet so I have a pretty strong disagreement with "Use your mirrors. It’s a much safer way to back up" as a general statement, but to each their own (also please don't back over my kids and later complain, "but the camera couldn't see that angle"... which is my exact use-case).

Overall I applaud the car, love the inevitable march forward of tech, and look forward to a future higher-def and better coverage camera system, hahaha

I spent 10 years daily driving a vehicle without a rear window. I also backed a car trailer through a fence gate unassisted yesterday with an inch clearance on each side of the fence using only the side mirrors on the truck. The mirrors are really all you need if you learn how to drive with them. It starts with adjusting them correctly. Please refer to this video if you are unsure.

Also the best way to ensure your kids are not ran over by myself, or anyone else, is to supervise them and their play. Seriously I know it seems like I'm coming across like a dick here but I'm really trying to do you a solid. In cars like the Rivian the rear window is all but useless for backing up. It's way too high to reliably see directly behind you hence why you have to lift your butt off the seat. When you are in that strained position you are not optimally positioned to control the car properly.

If my way wasn't correct then all semi truck drivers would be royally fucked. Consider the fact that they back up way more often than most people I strongly urge you to learn the proper way to utilize your mirrors for your safety and the safety of everyone you share the road with. It's also much easier once you get used to it.
