There will be plenty "Why does carplay work so poorly in my Rivian?" "Why do I have to leave carplay to change drive modes" "Does anyone else routing in waze not have their battery precondition before charging?" "Why don't I get that little map on the driver's display when navigating in carplay?"
How is this any different than any other app on the native Rivian infotainment? I can’t change drive modes from navigation or media.

Literally all of these could be supported by CarPlay if Rivian chose to implement them.
With the upcoming CarPlay changes/additions you can even have the little map on a second display. I think they've actually offered the dual screen mode for at least a year, but no automakers have implemented it yet.

So now Rivian has to do things other than just flip on a feature flag?

If this comes to fruition, this is the best news I've heard all year.

Even my wife says, this is the best vehicle we've ever owned, but it sucks it doesn't have carplay...

BMW has supported CarPlay navigation in the HUD for years now. iDrive 8 already supports showing maps in the gauge cluster. It currently only supports Apple Maps, but it does work well.

Of course they do. No one has argued it’s as simple as a feature flag. Adding a basic implementation with minimal integration would be relatively quick, and they have the option to expand it further.

Is this a hard concept for you to understand?

Um...As long as Jeff Bezos owns 18% of Rivian, there is 0 chance AA/CP gets implemented.

I'd expect an Amazon Alexa clone to be implemented before AA/CP.
I'm not so sure about that. If you look at what Amazon has done rather than what they say, it's clear Alexa isn't a priority for them anymore. Amazon just had the largest layoff in their history and the Alexa team was cut way back. Putting Alexa in a Rivian doesn't help them sell Prime subscriptions like their displays do and they have no alternative to AA/CP so what's the point of insisting on Alexa exclusivity?

On the Rivian side, all the layoffs happened in Irvine and word is the software team took a big hit. It's all well and good for Rivian to say they want to keep their software completely in house but they're cutting everything they can to keep costs down. Spending a fortune on a custom navigation and infotainment system doesn't improve their margins or get vehicles out the door any faster. Compared to building a competitive software stack on their own, adding CP/AA should be a cakewalk. Rivian may have realized they simply don't have the resources to do it on their own in a reasonable timeframe. I still doubt they're going to add it but I wouldn't be surprised. They have so much on their plate already, I can imagine them waving the white flag on CP/AA, especially since every single competitor (other than the Cybertruck) on the horizon also offers CP/AA.

BMW has not only the dual screen but HUD as well with CarPlay. I don't need that just want center screen that is all,

I'm hoping it's an option, that they charge an extra $2k for it.

Mostly because I'd rather not have it and because the Rivian devs need to fix current software vs implementing something new. But I don't wanna be the guy that says you can't have it, since last time I mentioned not wanting it, I got chased with a burning pitchfork :CWL:

I'm ok with Alexa being there, but how the heck do we convince the devs to add the additional wake word "computer" just like with the home version for Alexa.

I want to be able to be sitting at a stoplight and be able to say "Computer engage warp engines" and it do something cool, besides just squeal the tires as we rocket onto the freeway.

Honestly that's just a hateful position to take.

Even if you had it, you don't have to use it.

Noted...I think my MINI is on iDrive 7. I will say that I love the iDrive controller...didn't think I would. Makes it really easy to change between music and maps without using the touchscreen.

Yeah I'm not seeing it happening personally, I'll believe it when I see it. This comes up about every 300mS or so but then nothing comes of it

id be surprised if it happens. that would show though that they do want to do right by customers because if we get it then we wont really need LTE service through Rivian and they'd be losing a potential source of revenue.
