- All else equal, dual motors will get more range than quad motors
- Pre-order holders can switch to dual motor configs, but they’ll need to contact customer service and they give up pre-order pricing (except for quad max pack holders since Rivian will be replacing them with dual enhanced max pack at the previously emailed pricing)

thanks for sharing. unless its a decent range increase, with the increased overall price, i don't see any reason a quad would switch to a dual.

and i'd say there's some risk since this is Rivian's first in-house build electric motor ever. the quad is built by Bosch, who's been doing this for a while so im sure its built like a tank.

If it’s a 5-10% increase in range, I think it’s worth it
That can be achieved easily by changing wheel selection so I think for most the range improvement would need to be significantly bettet than 5-10%. I think the range improvement will be in that lower range but we will see.

what would be the source of the increase in range? less weight? more efficient motors?

I mean across the board, for same selected wheels

Considering it’s down ~250hp compared to the quad motors, there’s probably less voltage/amperage needed from the batteries. If it was significant they’d be posting it (IMO) to persuade switching from quad to dual for preorder holders. I certainly wouldn’t have given up ~250hp to add 15 miles, if that’s what it ends up being (5%)

They will be posting this info this month. It’s not because they’re trying to hide anything.

Yea it’s probably still getting official numbers evaluated, that’s understandable. I really hope it’s 10%+ better, a 360-370 mile range would be incredible!

^^^ what he said. R1S should be 350 with dual motor in all purpose. It’ll be 375ish in conserve.

5-10% range increase is worth sacrificing two motors and paying an extra $6k+?
1. After considering residual value when you sell the car, you’re probably paying a net $3k more for more range and efficiency
2. You’ll likely get your car sooner, if Rivian continues to produce dual motor alongside quads
3. More motors isn’t really better, unless you’re doing serious rock climbing. Lots to be said for more integrated components and fewer moving parts
