I live on the island of Oahu and am curious if anyone here on this forum was crazy enough to ship a Rivian to Hawaii. I've seen two on the road in passing so far but I can't help but think how desperate one must be to ship one here. If the vehicle breaks down for whatever reason and requires a Rivian tech to troubleshoot/fix it needs to be shipped back to the mainland on a boat and then by trailer to a repair center. It will cost thousands just to have someone look at it. Obviously as a day one reservation holder, I haven't even considered taking delivery here even if it was an option.

Sadly, my most recent communication with Rivian last week still shows no service centers planned for Hawaii so it could be years before a Rivian will be viable in Hawaii. Super disappointing but I understand they need to focus service centers in areas that have enough demand.

I seem to recall there are some early reservation holders in Hawaii who have an estimated delivery date in 2024. So perhaps in two years there will be a service center on Oahu?

There was the guy in Qatar or whever who had a Rivian with issues. Believe they flew a tech out to him to fix it. There's a thread on it somewhere. Obviously anything is possible if you have deep enough pockets. ? Good luck!

I read on Reddit a couple months ago that a few folks on Oahu took delivery of R1T's in Southern California and shipped them to Oahu.

When I took delivery of my R1T in Phoenix in 9/2022, I told our delivery specialist about our second preorder slated for a Hawaii delivery and she said her intention was to transfer to Hawaii once Rivian opens a service center.

For what it's worth, my second preorder was made in 11/2021 and for an R1S with a delivery address on the Big Island and my current delivery estimate is 2024.

I love my R1T, but I have had some major repairs on it - including 12V battery replacements, HV battery pack replacement, and a module repair that allowed me to Level 3 DC fast charge.

There is no way I'd ship or have a Rivian delivered to Hawaii without local service available. If you do, the only option for warranty repairs is to ship it back to the mainland.

Arguably, since the last time I checked it's about $1750 to ship one way between Honolulu and Los Angeles, one could argue that's enough to cover pre-3/1 pricing changes. For me personally, while the cost is manageable, the hassle would not be worthwhile for me.

They did not.

He had it fixed by an EV specialist in the region.

We were on vacation in Maui a few weeks ago and say a Rivian on the island. Also a blacked out McLaren which aren't known for reliability so an interesting choice!

I had a conversation with a local about how surprising it was seeing many new cars on the island. He said, most buy them in California or Washington and have them shipped for around $3k.

There are lots of new cars and plenty of dealerships in Hawaii. Not sure why new cars there are surprising. The reason so many people buy on the mainland (Oregon is a popular state from which to buy) is because of the “island tax.” Those plentiful dealerships are overpriced. Granted they do need to pay for their shipping costs which is understandable; however, if one is not in a hurry, it’s often several thousands cheaper even with shipping to search for a deal on the West coast.

Below are the current shipping rates. I’ve shipped 2 cars to the Big Island. In 2019, it was $1075. In 2021, it was $1740. Now it’d cost me $2147. It’s a little less expensive to Oahu.

My estimated delivery date got bumped up to June/July 2023. Anyone else in Hawaii see a similar improvement on their delivery date? I'm assuming this means they will have their service centers open by summer here. If anyone has any insight as to where this facility may be on Oahu, please share.

@shrink those rates look reasonable and some are comparable to land transport.

Interesting to hear. My delivery estimate stayed the same, July-December 2024. I'm on Lanai, so maybe why my date hasn't changed. If they do open a service center on Oahu, maybe I can take a service center delivery.

Just sent you a PM.

@Administrator - any chance a Hawaii subforum can be created? I think Hawaii Rivian owners are going to have some specialized ownership experiences. A Hawaii subforum might help build a local community and facilitate needed information sharing and support.

Mine is also still July - Dec but I am also outer island. Maybe @Surferdude can clarify what island he's on? That is at least a possible good sign that a service center is in the works.

I think “2023” was a typo. Weren’t we all just updated to July-Dec 2024?

I’ll be back in the Hawaii waiting for delivery club very soon and will post my delivery window to Kona after the next update.

I was planning on shipping my current R1T on the mainland in Phoenix to Kona after taking delivery of a Max Pack R1T with my second preorder, but I just can’t see the value of a Max Pack. So my current R1T is staying in Phoenix and my second preorder is now going to be an R1S to be delivered directly to Kona. I prefer the R1T but it won’t fit in my garage while an R1S will.

I was quite tempted to take delivery on the mainland and ship it. My buddy even sent me a photo of a white R1T parked in Kona 3 days ago. However, it’s much cheaper to have Rivian deliver to Hawaii and pay the lower Hawaii sales taxes. I’m also more comfortable waiting until Rivian service is more readily available - presumably Oahu based.

I guessing delivery estimate will be second half of 2024, but we’ll see.

Just a quick update... my excitement has faded to disappointment once again as my June/July estimate has now been revised to "processing estimate" with the new updated delivery estimate coming in August. I'm sure nobody else in Hawaii has managed to take a delivery of one yet since there hasn't been any announcement of a service center here. I'm bummed but it's been almost 5 years since my reservation so I've largely become numb to all this.
