Who else drives themselves near crazy thinking about other ways to spend roughly $80k on other vehicle(s) ...... only to realize nothing else will do. I keep myself in check by imagining the first Rivian that I spot on the road and the sickening feeling in my gut knowing that I should have waited for it - no matter how nice a vehicle I'm sitting in any sooner.

Ok LoneStar, you are 100% correct, I was one of the crazy people in a physical line of over 300 people years ago waiting to put a deposit on a Model 3 Sight un seen. I put my money down and waited over two years, I got impatient and bought a used Model S, that lasted a little over a year before I sold it at a slight loss to purchase the Model 3 I had originally wanted. My wife is asking why not a Model Y they are a proven manufacturer we can get one now, the charging infrastructure is in place and the list goes on and when you price a Performance Model Y you come in below the R1S, by a lot. But I know its not what I want. This time I am going to out for exactly what I want, hoping it not mid 2022 but if it is, I will have to wait.

Yeah, I hope Tesla has it together by then. I have a Cybertruck reservation. I'm also going to reserve an F150 EV later this month when the system opens up.

Ford plans to have the F150 EV out mid 2022. If they don't get delayed, they may be able to deliver a truck to me before anybody else.

I ordered my Cybertruck last summer and don't expect mine before mid 2023 at best. I'm like 500k or 600k in line or maybe even farther down.

I will not order a Rivian until final specs are released, so I won't get one until late 2022 best case scenario if I order this summer.

I would be happy with either the Ford, Rivian, or Cybertruck. They each have their own positives.

I will end up buying whichever one is able to be delivered first. At this point I suspect it will be Ford.

I did buy a Ford Mach e. Ordered December 2020. Will pick it up in a few weeks when delivered to dealer.

It takes about a month just to ship a mach e across the US from Kansas City where they all come off the train from Mexico. They use trains for most of the transport unless the final destination is relatively close to Kansas City. In that case, they use trucks for the final delivery to dealerships.

Unless Rivian has a way to transport their vehicles that is much faster than Ford, they would need to start shipping trucks the first week of June to meet their delivery timeline. Or they could just deliver a few within close proximity to the factory in order to avoid using trains, which are incredibly slow in the Ford example.

You are probably closer to 50 or 60K in line for the cyber truck. They only required a 100 dollar deposit and that was on a 39K vehicle.

Historically Tesla only has the top vehicles on initial release so it will be probably be 2-2.5 times that price on initial release. That will dissuade many pre-order holders from converting to an order. I would bet they convert only about 10% of the preorders into actual deliveries in the first year or 2.

Why do they need to communicate the exact specs to their Customers? Can’t think of one good reason other than a normal company would communicate as much about their product as they can. It might help sell the product. While RIVIAN may have enough orders for the first year that will not always be the case. The fact that the color they call “Launch” is still a mystery 4-6 weeks before delivery says it all.

You said it yourself...they have enough orders for the first year...so as long as they release the specs before that buffer is up then they will have ZERO problem drumming up new sales.

Y'all need to be a bit more patient...they arent asking for your full payment sight unseen. Start complaining July 1st when they havent delivered any vehicles.

Model Y and R1S arent even in the same stratosphere when it comes to what they are...the R1S is a completely different class in terms of size

I hope you are right. I'm guessing more like 1/4 or 1/3 of reservations will ultimately buy the Cybertruck. That is still more than they can produce in the first year, so I'm not getting a Cybertruck in 2022.

The top of the line Cybertruck is supposed to cost $70k, so I went into this knowing I would never buy a Cybertruck for $39k. I need AWD and more than 250 miles of range. Either the $50k or $70k Cybertruck would probably meet my needs as well as the R1T, but I definitely like the aesthetics and features of the Rivian more.

I do think Tesla will lose a fair amount of initial sales due to people like me holding reservations on multiple vehicles with a plan to take possession of whichever one is delivered first.

Even if Rivian gets delayed, it will still be delivered many months ahead of the Cybertruck and other EV trucks. That's going to result in some canceled reservations for sure.

I'm excited to see the electric F159 unveiled this month. I think it will be quite competitive and steal some Cybertruck customers. It's marketed to a different crown than the Rivian, so I suspect it won't take much of their business, but who knows?

I agree. There is no way they can give us just a few weeks to go through all of this. I think many people would like to look at financing options, move money around for a possible large down payment, go through the accessories and figure out what we need. Need time to process it.

It would take me all of one day to do all of this.

Just because some buyer can’t get their crap together quickly doesn’t mean Rivian can’t. I’ve gone from offer to closing on real estate in 10 days - a far more complicated process than buying a car. The buyer is the bottleneck, not the seller. If you’ve got your sh*t together and know what you want, they should be able to complete everything except the delivery part in just a few days. People who can’t make up their minds or can’t get their sh*t together can step out of line until they do.

I'm with @JeremyMKE here though too. There is a significant lack of information, especially knowing that items are finalized & in or nearing production.

There is either a culture or strategy component that is erring MUCH too far on the side of secrecy.

There is significant potential downside with the chance of cancelations, especially heading into a possible IPO. Competition is increasing rapidly & Rivian is still unproven.

Another really interesting point is that Rivian didn't sell us on these vehicles. We sold ourselves, likely because we were all looking for an EV that didn't exist on the market. Rivian has not effectively marketed either...

I believe in them, but they need to wake up as it relates to customer communication & relationships.

I predict they will continue to give this answer right up until the point in time that they stop giving this answer.

They will officially announce they won't make the deadline before they let customer service reps or other employees leak this info, so the answer given to you is not surprising.

All cash. No contingencies except title work. Gives you good leverage on price if you’ve got a motivated seller that doesn’t have the luxury of a deal falling through due to all the crazy contingencies that get put into most offers these days.
