Mad props to @RforRivian on the post of the year so far, IMO!

Quoted hrre for reference in case any other readers weren't aware...
I love the post too, but they seem to be letting out FARTs lately (Friday Arbitrary Rivian Tidbits).

What number do you have?
I'm way down the overall list at about 7,600. Back out the 1,000 starting point, and that puts me at 6,600. Knowing the approximations I've heard here between R1T & R1S models and the different batteries, I'm guessing about I'm about #1,800 in line for the LE R1T (in Launch Green, options & wheels TBD). Maybe better with cancelations.

Now you know why I'd sacrifice my time, energy, and money to fly back there and drive vehicle #3 (behind RJ & Jeff) right off the factory floor to help get them moving. One less truck to ship for Rivian, as well! No need to thank me...I'm just that kind of guy ?

How about you?

I'm guessing we will see a splashy "event" of some sort in the near future with a final reveal of actual production units in all the colors/interiors, with full specs available and all (or at least most) of the details people are looking for.

They'll possibly also formally announce the Test Drive program/schedule and let people know it is for reservation holders only (make yours today!).

Holding a big event where they reveal some anticipated concrete information (EPA ranges, i.e.) gets them more Press/PR than dribbling it out thru emails or thru CS.
I think you're right on a big event "very, very soon". No matter what else Rivian does, I truly expect the big three mags, Car/Motor/Road, will have feature stories with R1Ts on their covers. I won't be surprised if an R1T doesn't grace the cover of the next issue of each (July or August, at this point).

While the slow drivel of information from Rivian has clearly riled up most everyone here (myself included), I look at it as a continuation of the plan that started with the original L.A. debut in 2018. No flashy hype machine like Tesla's. In fact, this whole 2½ years has been the opposite of Tesla, from the lack of indoor pyrotechnics (along with some tragic roadway versions), to allowing the vehicle to battle the steel balls to the glass and pulled punches from a rubber-coated sledgehammer, rather than the off-road real world.

Don't get me wrong, I think very highly of Elon Musk and Tesla, but I'm more comfortable with the style that RJ and Rivian have shown from the beginning. Look at a CyberTruck and an R1T side by side, and you will see a mountain of differences in two amazing creations and companies. You'd learn a whole bunch about their amazing founders, as well. While Musk and Tesla have always maintained a fairly high public profile, RJ and Rivian have remained low profile and subdued.

Better to do everything in a planned, rational, deliberate manner and get it right, than to sizzle, then fizzle by promising the Moon and, ultimately, delivering a.....car.

I wonder how many people take this into account, consciously or not? To me it feels like TESLA is a tech company which happens to make cake cars. I think the company designs cars and incorporates features using visionary/idealistic priorities rather than customer priorities. As just one example, the company is so focused on FSD over instrumentation on the 3 and Y that they are leaving money on the table with some sales and outright losing others. If people will pay $1,500 for a paint color, do you really think they wouldn’t pay the same amount or more for a HUD if they place importance on driving without having to look down at a display?

I have a great deal of respect for TESLA and Elon Musk for pushing the adoption of EVs. My hope is that Rivian will strike a better balance (for the average driver) when it comes to leading edge tech vs. traditional car interface. We came very, VERY close to buying a Model Y as a commuter car for my husband, but some of the uncompromising vision kept us from purchasing. We would have gotten a Model X but the Falcon Wing doors are a deal-killer for us.

On some level I think TESLA would be better off if Elon focused most of this attention on SpaceX so the car business could offer some features which appeal to even more buyers.
FSD isn't for everyone. It will be nice to have it, but I'll drop my magazine subscriptions if they ever morph into "Car and Passenger", "Road & Nap", and "MotorEnd".

That at a minimum RJ gets his delivery by the end of June. ?
Not to quibble, but I'm guessing it may be that RJ already got his deliveries by the end of April. The entire Scaringe family looks pretty comfortable in the R1S and R1T we've seen them in lately. As Tom Petty sings, "It's good to be King" ?

Congrats on the early order! Is 1,236 your number after subtracting the starting point of 1,000 that others here have discussed?

Found this interesting - new Plaid Model S is set to start deliveries in June, and buyers have yet to see the new UI. Not that Tesla is the best benchmark for service, but at least Rivian not showing the UI isn’t without precedent.

“Also, it is going to be interesting to see the new user interface, which Tesla has yet to show for the new Model S.”

One of the earliest orders, 1236 before subtracting the 1000, 236 after.

Unquantified deliveries, but I've heard the same.

I'm with @JeremyMKE here though too. There is a significant lack of information, especially knowing that items are finalized & in or nearing production.

There is either a culture or strategy component that is erring MUCH too far on the side of secrecy.

There is significant potential downside with the chance of cancelations, especially heading into a possible IPO. Competition is increasing rapidly & Rivian is still unproven.

Another really interesting point is that Rivian didn't sell us on these vehicles. We sold ourselves, likely because we were all looking for an EV that didn't exist on the market. Rivian has not effectively marketed either...

I believe in them, but they need to wake up as it relates to customer communication & relationships.
Skyote,

Well stated! It's for these very reasons that I think we'll see a big surprise splash in the auto mags, similar to this week's Road & Track's double issue for June and July.
Rivian R1T R1S June Deliveries... 20210513_095559

I said it earlier, but I believe this has been Rivian's un-Tesla-like plan from the beginning. A decade of crickets and then "Hello, World!" at the L.A. Auto Show in 2018. Drips and dribbles of info since, along with very well done regional meet and greets with RJ, his team, and a few vehicles. No Cirque du Soleil sideshow, no pyrotechnics, and no cannonballs or sledgehammer needed to prove that glass is actually fragile.

It has been annoying to many, frustrating and infuriating to others from time to time. Do I wish we knew much, much more? Hell yes! Am I willing to sit back and let it play out as Rivian has said it will (after factoring in this whole pandemic thingy)? Yep. That said, I'm not going to be pleased if we get an 11th hour notification that another 60 or 90 days are needed to start this process. Absent that, I'm taking my Thursdays back. No longer will I wait for Rivian to make a big announcement. I'm now free to pour over the same material and threads I've already seen or read a dozen times each while I await that email and phone call from my Guide.

I'm impressed. I must have been suffering a rectal-cranial inversion for a couple of months. I didn't know anything about Rivian until February 19, 2019. I think it made the news that day because of Amazon's investment(?). Regardless, within an hour of reading the article and doing some research, I didn't hesitate to make my deposit for an R1T. Looking back, I wish I would have also placed a deposit for the R1S as well. I know we can switch our choice between the two, but on the chance that Marie Osmond was to come knocking on my door, I would like to have been ready for both of these vehicles (and her). By the way, Marie, no mask required.... ?
