Hi, lurker here. Just got shop access 5/23 and snapped up an LE LG RIS with VIN# 11,xxx. My guide said it had just been finished this month and is factory gated waiting for final inspection and shipping. He also said it has the new compressor and sound system (which I expected with a May build date). Just thought I'd pass the info along.
I guess the question is: Does VIN reflect build date? For example, could someone have a VIN in the 5,XXX and have a build date the same as someone in the 11,XXX?

Referring back to the very beginning of this thread in February (and the serial number that @LL75 got), your 5095 likely rolled off the assembly line in February. Rivian started delivering customer R1Ss in late August and early September. So the factory had at least 6 months of practice and experience before 5095 rolled off the line. Of course, there is the mystery of why 5095 apparently sat at the factory for 3-ish months before it was deemed ready for delivery. You'll probably never know. A likely scenario is that it was waiting for one missing part ... a part that had to cross an ocean on a container ship, etc, etc. Over on the R1S Shop thread, we've recently seen even earlier VINs suddenly appear as Shop inventory.

You've waited almost 4 years. Take it!
This might sound strange when most are so anxious to get their vehicles, but I was always OK waiting until the assembly line got better at building R1Ss. The 5095 number might suggest the assembly line was still struggling with how to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Plus, I haven't even driven an R1S yet, nor do I know who is my Rivian Guide.

I was strongly considering changing my R1S order from quad motor large pack to dual motor max pack. Does anyone know if pre-order pricing still applies if you switch to dual motor max pack?

Pre-order pricing will apply if you switch from R1T quad max to R1T dual max - but only because Rivian is not building the quad max that some of us configured.

However, there was no max option offered for the R1S during the pre-order days, so if you want an R1S with dual max, you'll have to pay current prices. Sorry.

No, the numbers may not be sequential but they will be close. Something in the 5k rang is probably late Feb or early March, something in the 11k range is probably late May.

There is a slight exception when they temporarily reset the 2023 vins in December before they raised them back up but you could tell then what was earlier by the vin date code.

Makes me wonder why my VIN/vehicle has been "sitting" since Feb. Glacier white, 21" wheels with Forest edge interior. Nothing special. Hmmm. Maybe it was damaged somehow? Isn't that supposed to be the advantage of buying a new vehicle? You're not buying someone else's problems.

Probably just when it was pulled from the lot, the lot was full of vehicles when I was there in January. I picked mine up end of January, was built in October, had no issues with mine. I do not think it is a big deal.

later build doesn't mean it will be better. I see people complaining with later builds all the time on here. People keep forgetting that Rivian is a new company. There will be imperfections on all vehicles.

new compressor? I knew about the frame changes, the suspension changes, the audio system changes, but what's the new compressor?

New compressor and tank for the air suspension. Much faster and silent compared to previous version
interesting, any posts/links for the info? I'll be honest, I was hoping it was the AC compressor, but I'll take any improvements :D

I absolutely get that Rivian is a new company, but with every car they build on the line, assembly should get a little better. Maybe even some weekly feedback to improve problem areas.

My service advisor says that every service issue is logged, including cost to fix and sent back to the factory. It seems that they use a probabilistic model to determine what’s priority to fix on the assembly line. They seem to take this feedback loop seriously

Mine is 72XX (built 3/23) and has all that. Ask for the picture of the door sticker (shows build date) and/or decode the VIN (thread on that here)
Hmm... I just visited Rivian service center today asking what the build date was for my R1S VIN 5095. I watched as he pulled it up on the computer screen: 3/23. So, if tk21 is in the 72XX range and also has a build date of 3/23, maybe tk21's R1S was built at the end of March and my VIN 5095 at the beginning? I guess that means over 2000 R1S were built in March? If other R1S are being delivered with VINs of >10,XXX, why does mine have a VIN that is almost 5000 vehicles earlier? Something doesn't seem right.

I am nervous about 2 things:
1. If the R1S was built in early March, why am I just now getting a notice that it's time to purchase? Why (and where) did it sit for 2-3 months?
2. Early build dates mean the assembly line has less experience actually assembling the vehicle properly. I hope to be lucky, but everyone knows the more you "practice" at something the better you get at it.
