Hopefully the crowd is packing fire extinguishers
In all fairness, most brands have experienced at least one fire. It was a prototype, too, so I don't think we should be too hard on them for it. The point of testing is to find limits.

There are brands that have been known to catch fire in customer hands, but that doesn't seem to harm their reputation:

Good luck to them with making the hub motors unsprung mass on each wheel.

Considering the prototype caught fire shortly after leaving their building for the first time, that's a pretty extreme limit.

I would think opportunities to do both will present themselves throughout the next few years.
My thoughts turned to the irony of Workhorse barely having a beta version on the road but yet scheduling a media week with plant tours no-less and Rivian with what we assume to be production versions for months still locked down tighter than Fort Knox

Not excusing Rivian’s piss poor communications, but Lordstown is in a very different situation. They are in a free fall, and need to do some press events like this to hopefully stop the bleeding.

Poor Lordstown... Apparently the test drive vehicles were Chevy Silverado's with Lordstown drive components but due to the fire and design delays of the hub motors the test vehicles kept the Chevy drive trains as well... So the test drives are taking place in stock Silverado's re-badged with a Lordstown emblem.
Is this Libel since I made it up and, considering Lordstown's track record it's probably believable?
I just don't think Lordstown is going to be a viable EV company. I admittedly don't follow them as closely as Rivian, Tesla, GM, Ford, VW.

Imagine if Prez. Biden had done his PR gig yesterday at the Rivian factory, with several R1Ts, R1S's and Amazon Prime vans parked all around a podium. That would have been so very much more on point with an EV-centric message promoting EV infrastructure investments and "Made in the USA" electric adventure (and commercial) vehicles. Holding it inside Rivian's factory floor would have looked so sweet. Its always clean, organized and well-lite.

Would be a sad situation if Ford actually does have wire tied around RJs nuts and squeezed Rivian to remain low-profile until tonight's F-150 EV truck reveal. Even worse if they lobbied Biden admin to do it in the Ford plant instead of giving Rivian this golden opportunity.

Then again... odds are nobody in the Whitehouse (or Washington D.C.) ever heard of Rivian in the first place!

Since Ford owns part of Rivian, one would expect that both companies will avoid stealing the thunder of the other.

Its all just speculation anyway. But as a key investor/owner of Rivian, Ford would be better off giving them all the fanfare possible. That's because it would still be impossible for Rivian to meaningfully overshadow Ford's revealing electrification of the highest selling vehicle in America.

Today, Rivian would literally have been yesterday's news story.

That can't be true. We have seen that Rivian has been significantly more interested in talking to and providing demonstrations for politicians than their customers.

Ford =UAW=union, Rivian not so much plus Illinois is never contested in the Presidential elections any more so don't expect Prez Biden in Normal anytime soon
