Well its a shame... and really a gimmick in real world application (except for off-roaders).

"Over the last year and a half, we've arrived at the view that it's a feature that, while we can do it, it's so easily abused and so hard to make sure that we don't tear up trails and really do things that are in contrast to what we stand for as a company," Scaringe said in the Q&A video.

I’ll make do with my 835 HP truck that can run mid 11’s. I’ll be fine.

Because no one tears up trails while putting the car into drift mode.

Should be able to perform tank turns on the sand dunes without issue.

We all know trail conservation isn't the real reason we won't get tank turn feature.
Drifting is pretty tricky to do on tight trails. I wouldn't take the risk on anything I drive. Tank turn though, would be easy.

Wow those comments are something else. They sure aren't sending their best people into that comment section. Today I've learned that my battery will only last a few turns which admittedly is surprising to me as I've had the truck since September and don't really worry about range at all.

People like that are why I don't call myself a Republican.

Honestly, I think this is a good thing. There is no doubt that tank turn is unnecessarily damaging to the environment, but they probably won't go forward in part because it is likely very hard on the vehicle and gives people another thing to do in an unsafe manner. While a fun looking stupid human trick, this is honestly something I don't think I'll miss in any way.

If we were a responsible species I'd be disappointed.

( street takeovers for YouTube subscribers) I live in Southern California, it's stupid. Giving these idiots another tool.
( I'm sure those videos would be far more popular than idiots in crappy Subaru cars with loud exhausts)

Another perspective from my a Rivian employee friend who was around long enough to actually witness tank turn in action on the first test vehicles. Since the safe operation of tank turn required the use of the motion/ object detection system, if it was somehow bypassed or it malfunctioned, it would probably run over anyone standing next to the vehicle. It moves so fast, there would be no time for anyone to get out of the way. It never happened in real practice, but it worried him a little. Also, tank destroyed anything under it when used offroad and created deep ruts. If done on pavement, it destroyed the tires just as fast.

In reality, most places I could see it being helpful, like a shelf road or slot canyon, it probably wouldn’t be accurate enough to risk using.

I always thought the only reasonable way to implement it would be if you had a graphic of the Rivian in 360 view and you could rotate the truck on-screen to the position you wanted it before hitting a control (with disclaimer language, of course) to execute the rotation. Even then, the chance of slipping in an unintended direction because of a slope, solids under the loose surface, or some other factor are too high, I think.

edit:typo

How about an implimentation that only allowed for 10-15 degrees of turn at a time, with a 30 second wait between movements. This keeps people from going crazy and would help people in an offroad type function getting around obstacles. For full implimentation, I've spent more than 5 minutes on Tiktok, so I have zero faith in society as a whole...
