Fellow Rivians,

I ordered my R1S back in 2020. I received word that my vehicle was ready for delivery. I fit into this weird space where I live close enough to where Rivian will not deliver to me, which is not an issue. I’m happy to drive to Normal to pick up the vehicle. The rub is that Rivian has added an $1800 destination fee. My guide said that it can’t be waived. Clearly not a decision he can make. I got a bunch of excuses from him. If I’m to drive up and pick up the vehicle on my own nickel where they manufacture, why would they charge me a destination fee?? I’m pissed and I’m ready to cancel on principle alone. If the vehicle was transported from some other part of the country or they delivered to me, I’d be fine. What a joke!! I’m ready to contact the Attorney General. Love the vehicle. Love the company. Don’t love the nickel/dime attitude. Thoughts??

I'm afraid you have a bitter pill to swallow. Everyone pays the same destination fee regardless of whether you live in Alaska or Hawaii, next door to the factory, or take factory delivery. It's not negotiable. Your're not paying the cost of delivering the vehicle to you personally, you're paying the average cost for the delivery of all vehicles. Works in favor of those in Hawaii, probably seems unfair to those taking factory delivery. This also isn't a Rivian thing.

This is federally mandated. No dealer can waive or lower this fee.

You won’t get around a destination fee whether you buy a Rivian or a Hyundai. It is an expense that if charged is mandated by federal law to be the same charge for everyone.

Federally mandated?? This isn’t a dealer.
Doesn’t matter that it’s not a dealer. It’s a requirement for manufacturers.

Dude, that’s ridiculous. Destination fees seem to be different across the board. I’m ready to tell them to deliver it 50 miles outside of my city. the definition of destination fee is for transportation costs.

They are the same for all Rivians purchased during the same period of time. Rivian’s destination fees have increased over the last two years but every buyer always pays the same fee.

This is true across the board for every manufacturer that sells vehicles in the United States.

It has already been explained to you by posters in this thread and Rivian has already told you it’s a requirement. Feel free to also use your Google skills.

Not every buyer.
