My R1T got whacked!

I was waiting at a red light, then proceeded straight after it turned green when a kid driving a black Acura blew through his red light. I tried to stop, but he hit the front of my R1T, bounced into a concrete highway divider, flipped, and took down a traffic light post. No airbags deployed in my car, two in the Acura. The kid was a little banged up and was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but I think he’ll be fine. I’m fine, but sadly my beloved Rivian isn’t. The cameras automatically recorded it as an “Incident”.

I’m not looking forward to the insurance and repair process.

What a mess, especially that Acura! Amazing the apparent difference in damage, I hope you don't have to go too long without your R1T.

The video playback toward the end did some weird things, like a skipping phonograph record. Maybe just an artifact of conversion/posting/playback? Did the captured video look o.k.?

Jeez, glad all involved appear to be ok. I often am first off the line after a signal change, but it does come with an element of risk, given who we share the road with. Hope the repair process is not too arduous!

If this accident was Pennsylvania, the next thing you'd likely get is a demand for damages letter from the lawyer of the Acura owner, stating that you proceeded into the intersection before the light turned green and so are responsible for the accident. Don't ask me how I know this, but it's the reason I always wait for a few seconds after the light turns green before proceeding into the intersection.

Traffic lights in the Portland metro reason have a slight delay between one set turning red and the other set turning green. That means, for a brief moment, that all lights at an intersection are red. Seems like a good idea in light of what happened to John B.

First of all, I'm very glad that the OP was not injured.

I always wait a full second or two when a light turns green for this very reason. Throughout Oregon and California I have done this, while other drivers or my wife are saying/honking/shouting "Go!" . Often some fool runs the light and I just avoided a nasty accident. It's bad enough when it's an Acura. Now picture a fully-loaded semi. That semi tractor-trailer scenario is far too common in Salem, Corvallis, and Albany, to name a few.

Oh, and stay off my lawn!

Glad you’re ok, and good luck with the repairs! The R1 is built like a tank and it’s great that it did its job, even in this case where its job was to put an Acura into LEO.

Glad the kid came away largely unscathed. That’s a hell of a lesson to learn.

Always get spooked when I see younger people in gnarly, self-inflicted, and entirely preventable accidents like this, having a young adult child and another who is nearing driving age …

CO lights have a delay but I still wait a second or 2 after because apparently red just means "speed up and you'll make it" around here.

OP - glad you and the dumb kid who hit you are ok. Hope you get a new T very soon!

Glad you are ok. As soon as you are able to-start taking notes and have a general conversation with an attorney. It's always best to note as much detail as possible early on. Also, good to note names and dates as you will most probably have to interact with loads of people form insurance to police. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Glad you are ok. I think front impacts are easy(easier) on these. The massive rear/side damage is what gets you. Of course, we don't know how available the parts are.
