Why will beautiful 22" wheels achieve 10% less range than the not so pretty 21" wheels for dual motor RT1?

21" wheels are slightly less surface area, restricting more airflow through the wheel face, with a better aero design (inclusive of the aero covers); which equates to better range over the 20" and 22" options.

Way softer rubber. My S with the 21s doesn't have nearly the grip that my T with 22s has.

That's interesting. Have you measured the g forces difference or speed through a turn or something? Maybe you could swap wheels to be sure. :) For science!

I ask because I'm very interested in getting the best grip for the available season. It doesn't surprise me that the 22" tires are better in the dry. The Pirelli website even implies it should be better in the snow than the 21", but I assume it's similar.

Also, to the OP, the 21" wheels look better with the wheel covers removed, with seemingly still better range than the 22".

IMO the 21" wheels look best with covers removed, and powdercoated black.

Agree, OP‘s question is answered, perhaps a bit obscurely, on Rivian‘s web site In the more about wheels and tires pop up. The 21” low rolling resistance = harder rubber = higher range.

Max pack numbers are still conservative estimates, and round numbers,, because those haven't been tested by EPA yet. Try not to read too much into them.

Weight and tire compound. You can see weight of each wheel+tire at the Gear Shop.

Youtuber did a video on this recently. Multifactorial, but much of it comes down to rotational intertia (inherent property of larger diameter wheels needing greater work to increase rotational velocity).
