What happened here and how do I stop it from happening again?

I was stopped about to pull into a parking spot, but not in park. I’m nearly certain in Drive. I believe I then shifted the right hand side gear to D again(?) and the car then starts accelerating aggressively toward another car. I slammed on the brakes. What did I turn on?? I didn’t place a foot on the accelerator.

You activated cruise control... so the car was accelerating to the set speed. Pulling down on the "shifter stock" while in "D" activates cruise control.
Do it a second time and you activate Driver+. Rivian needs to lock out CC activation below 5 MPH.

Cruise control. If you're expecting the vehicle to slow down and it continues driving at the speed you are traveling when activated, it sure will feel like acceleration. But what kind of distance from the car are we talking about, were you in tow mode? Adaptive cruise should still react to proximity to other vehicles if activated in a parking lot.

I've never managed to accidently do that though, usually it yells at me that it's disabled and to get the vehicle serviced because my truck thinks I'm not a moron who tried to activate cruise where I shouldn't (It's wrong)

This was my initial thought as well, but OP said he was pulling into a parking spot and ACC only activates above a certain speed (20mph?). I assumed he was going slower than that.

From a stop in traffic not touching any pedals, once down on the stalk sets the cruise to 20mph. Maybe that’s what happened.

I haven't tried it from a stop, but I can't activate cruise control below 20mph. Not sure why being stopped would allow it.

I had my R1S do exactly what happened to the OP. I was parking, and when I pushed down to put it in D (it was already in D), the vehicle started to accelerate. Maybe a software flaw... but it happened.

I really hope it doesn't, but if it does happen again, be sure to capture logs and a timestamp (long press your name on the center screen) and report it to Rivian.

I’m not crazy!
Is this something I need to enter service ticket about or is there a user here that can be tagged so Rivian gets to work on it?

No user here, but Wassym on Reddit can help. 1000% report it though.

It works every time for me. From a dead stop while on auto hold, once down on the stock sets the adaptive cruise to 20 mph.

Using the "shift lever" stalk for cruise control is just a bad UX decision. Shifting into Park, Drive, Neutral or Reverse should not provide a different vehicle response other than the intended user action related to vehicle movement direction. In this sense Tesla's on-screen shifting works out better.

Interesting, I'll test it out tonight when i leave work.

I can't imagine a use case for this behavior.

There have been a few unintended acceleration incidents on the forums, I wonder if this is what happened in their case.

It will only activate under 20 if it "sees" another car in front of you. If no car it won't engage. That's what I've seen across the forums.
