I am a brand new Rivian Forum member (although I have been a classiczcars Forum member for years with my 71 240Z).

I took delivery of my Forest Green R1S with black interior this Saturday. VIN# 19751. Order Date Dec. 2021. This my first EV and getting used to it. I noticed a couple issues right away like my passenger A pillar trim is not properly installed and the subwoofer has a rattle when the music is turned up. Hopefully, the Portland, OR service center isn't too backlogged but these are minor issues really.

I have been reading this forum since I ordered so I knew some things to ask the guide on delivery. My guide has been there 2 years and seemed very knowledgeable. I was told charging speed should be updated to 250kw peak speed very soon. She also mentioned streaming services will be coming likely before the end of the year. Both good news!

One improvement I would love to see if the option to have the main screen turn off and keep the icons at the bottom. Having a large screen always showing especially at night is a bit distracting. But so far love it and the Forest Green color has received universal praise.

Excited to be part of the community and I learn a lot!

250kW will be nice, but the charging curve is much more important than top charging speed. If it could charge at 1mW for 1 sec, then the top end of 1mW means nothing to me.

Streaming will be nice when stuck at slower chargers, but I hope they include support for Plex.

I have doubts that they're going to be able to push 250 kW with a software update.

If the R1 large pack voltage is 400V nominal, then you would need 625 amps to achieve 250 kW. That amperage would be even higher at lower states of charge with lower voltage.

I don't think CCS1 is rated beyond 500 amps.

So the only way this makes sense if the Max Pack has higher voltages or they're going to introduce revised Large battery packs. Edit: or if RAN chargers are reconfigured to provide more than 500 amps.

CCS actually doesn't have an upper limit. The specification classifies the highest end charger block as "500A or greater". It's just that no one has bothered to implement higher than that yet.

I wonder how much control Rivian has over the rear climate screen. Could they stream to that screen?
My dogs would like that.

The 360 kw is possible at 500 amps, but only at 720 (or more) volts.

Ohm's law. The Rivian has a (nominal) 400 volt pack, and in practice a bit more than that which is why we seen 220ish speeds at times. As stated above, 250kw charging isn't happening with current CCS hardware.
This could align with the debut of access to the Tesla network. V3 superchargers hit over 600 amps on teslas for a short period of time.

There's provisions in a recent update for standardizing to higher amperage.

There's also the question as to whether Rivian wants to push their own equipment harder on RAN. V3 Supercharger cables aren't rated for 680A, but they push them based on temps. Rivian could do conceivably do the same up to the 300kw output of a RAN charger.

That's not to say I think Rivian *is* doing that, they've been coy about pushing above 500A, but it's not outside of the realm of possibilities.

Admittedly I am way out of my depth on this issue. I work in insurance for a reason. =)

But I do own a business and deal with lawyers, compliance, etc. Rivian's initial press release said they would have charging speeds up to 300+ KW. I can assure you they would not have released it unless they had already hit it in a testing environment at least.

According to Ohm's law the max would be 200KW and we are already seeing 220KW so something is going on. It would not surprise me how over engineered Rivian was (at least initially) they put in some headroom or other capability they are not using yet.

Lastly, I told my guide as a new EV driver I have range anxiety and was not 100% sold on EV's given the time to recharge on road trips. This is when she volunteered the increased capacity coming soon. Time will tell.

It was likely misleading and they may vary well have meant the *chargers* are capable of 300kw, and not the R1 vehicles.

Not doubting you. This has just been a really poor communication point on Rivian's end for like two years now.

They're not. The 200kw comes from the pack voltage being about 440v.

They have total control over the rear screen and have teased upgrades like mapping. Streaming video? Not sure I'd like that even if they could (too small and low to be any good IMHO), but media controls should be more than possible.
