FYI - just got a call from Rivian to follow up on my request(s) to update the tire size on my truck (went from OE 21” to OE 20”). They twice previously told me they’d do an OTA. This call was to let me know that the previous employee was misinformed - presumably then shot and buried in the back, behind the R2 mock-ups - and that indeed I need to go to the SC to do this.

<sigh>

I asked what the real benefits were, and he said it was tied into multiple systems. Then he said “even gearing” at which point I threw my hands up in the air.

Anyway - OTA tire size change is a no-go. Because apparently they change gearing based on a 1” tire size change. LOL
I was told something similar months ago. I was switching to 21's from 20's and the SC did not make the change when it was in (for a different issue that also was not resolved). They said they had to contact the mother ship and that it would come OTA. And that someone would call me to follow up. None of that happened.

I've since got about 8000 miles on 21's and 4000 on 20's and interchange them regularly. The truck doesn't care or behave any differently with either set on.

I want OTA tire rotations.
If we lived in a cartoon universe, I could see a mode for this. The vehicle would disconnect from the wheels (which of course remain upright and motionless, because it’s a cartoon) then rise up in the air and do a tank-turn style 180° spin before settling back on the wheels which reconnect to the vehicle. I think I watched too many cartoons as a kid.

My guess is that your vehicle will need to go into a "service mode" or something as such to change the tire diameter. Rivian would rather not let you go into a service mode on your own. If we were to be able to change tire diameters ourselves they would need to create a consumer level service mode that doesn't give the random dude enough control to ever break something on their own.
I disagree and I think at some point they may add this. They already have a service menu. The tire size is all software, they can add it on that screen and handle any of the required mode changes behind the scene.

They only thing I can think of not to allow this is not wanting people to threw off actual mileage by selecting the wrong size but that already happens if people change sizes without making an appointment for the vehicle correction. It also could be solved by having mileage based off of GPS instead of tire rotation.

Not released to this post but general response to CS mis-information. Rivian should probably put in a policy of not answering questions that do not have an approved response canned for them. I’m sure a lot of people would be up in arms with all of the “we do not have any information on that” responses but certainly would prevent all of the mis-information people seem to get.

Crazy!

Meanwhile back in my other-brand-starts-with-a-"T" vehicle, every time I do a wheel swap (>10x during the Colorado winter season, all seasons -> snows -> all seasons) I go to the vehicle screen > Service > Wheel size and select from the factory wheel sizes.

For a technology company, this is an easy one to implement. Sigh...
Like you I got a extra set of 20"s for winter and I plan to change them myself since I have all the sutff in my garage. I dont understand why we cant change that our selves. Even a lot of Audis I had they gave you this option.

I pictured my truck going into “hover mode”, then the wheels detach themselves and like little drones switch positions. :CWL:

My whole life is a cartoon.

I dropped mine off today with 20 inch -> "21 inch, 22 inch, I don't care what y'all do, I just want the rotational speed to match for my speedo and odometer". I showed them my 275/60/20 and was told "we'll see what the tech does!"

Ironically, the switch to 20s made my speedo dead-accurate, where the 21s were off by around 3% (reading fast). Would be nice to have the guess-o-meter be a little more accurate, too.

What tires are you running now? I remember the thread, but too lazy to sift through the forum.

My SC writes this update up as a $180 process. Last time a mobile tech came out and did it and he refused to actually charge new

Pirelli All Season Plus 3 275/60/20. It seemed like they didn't care, but we'll see!

FWIW, nav said it would take 66 miles to go 60 miles, it actually only took 50, and I got a legit 2.50 mi/kWh headed there, 8% improvement over my ATs 2.3 average!

Mine had $120 on the service approval.

Wow - I didn’t realize they were $200 cheaper than OE 21s. Wild.

Not surprised you got such great efficiency. I was easily seeing that and better on the 21s with stock tires.

The vehicle knows the ride height changes with the suspension changes. It can compensate for those no problem because it's already been programmed to.

There's also no reason they couldn't do correlation for tire rotation counts and gps displacement for determining the tire size, but they aren't.
I guess my main point is that they clearly have a calibration set for each of their three stock tires. So unless there is something physical that needs to be adjusted with the cameras, it seems like it should be easy to switch OTA - certainly easier than overhauling stability and traction control. And if it IS something physical to adjust, heaven help us with their track record on panel alignment ?

And then I come full circle and convince myself it’s all placebo anyway.

Do we honestly think that Tesla’s wheel size adjustment would have any meaningful effect on accuracy when they basically gaslighted owners on range estimates? Sorry - off topic. Couldn’t resist.

It is all software and totally doable. Just needs to get done and doing stuff takes time. Either that or they enjoy charging labor hours to flip software settings.

You can change wheel size as often as you like in a Tesla by yourself in the car UI. Why is it so hard for Rivian?
