I live in park city, utah. I ordered my R1T in March, 2019. I’ve been waiting on a max pack due to mountains, snow, cold temps, etc. I tow two ATVs during the summer and two snowmobiles in the winter. We don’t tow them more than an hour drive away. Most the time, it’s closer. I have great pricing. I can get the dual- motor large pack with all terrain upgrade. I’m holding out for max pack. Listening to you tube reviews of the max pack it sounds like the only difference is battery chemistry. It sit like it is going from 135kw battery to 180kw battery. I don’t think I need the quad because I don’t take the truck on heavy duty 4 wheeling. Use the ATVs for that.

does anyone have mountain experience? Any advice? I’m sick of waiting and not sure what I’m waiting for is worth it.

thank you

Only advice is that if you really want the max pack, wait a bit longer. Multiple reservation holders have been asked to lock in their configurations in the past week (including me). With delivery dates for most in Jan/dec. With a few claiming earlier dates and one or two with VINS.

You probably don’t need a max pack but you pay basically the same for a quad motor large pack as you do a dual motor max pack right? If you config the two what is your price difference?

On the other hand the range difference is quantifiable. QM large pack is 329 miles and DM Max pack is 410 miles so that is a 28% difference. Obviously less range difference with the ATs but still 28%.

With a 2019 pre-order, a quad should be $71,500.

DM + Max Pack is $70,000 + $7,000 = $77,000.

I'm in the same boat, but will either try to grab something from the Shop on Oct. 1 or, if nothing grabs me, I'll edit my build to a quad.

I guess I was a bit off, I was thinking about my $80k purchase price but I had some options. Still though for pre-hike customers $7k for a 28% range increase doesn’t seem like a bad deal if the quad motor isn’t a need.

You might be fine with the large pack. But if the cash isn’t a big deal you’ll be more comfortable towing with the max pack.

with snow tires on our quad motor in winter we got around 2.0 mi/kWh. We live in CO so a lot of elevation gain like Utah. Probably a bit better with dual motor, but 2 hours of driving towing sleds and you are probably going to be using close to the full battery some on the coldest days, especially if it’s at higher speeds. I would wait for the max if you can.

without towing, I am very satisfied with winter with the large pack. If you have a fast charger you don’t mind stopping at for a few minutes on the longer days, large will probably be ok.

I’m in PC. If you’re 100% sure you‘ll tow less than an hour…the large battery is acceptable. I used to take 2x snowmobiles out to Vernal…that’s not doable with the Rivian as the charging infrastructure is nil. 20” tires, towing, snow….I’d hold out for a max pack. Heck, even in the summer I can’t hit the eastern Unitas.

I live in the mountains but I drive slow so my efficiency is epic, even in the winter. I also only run the heater when I have to I never leave it on

if you don't tow too often and have a fast charger on the way, quad may be more capable on the snow. We have to wait for reviews of course.

My advice would be, don't wait for the Rivian. If you're hauling stuff, it'll be much cheaper, way more reliable and less stressful to get yourself a decent ICE truck. Rivian ain't for hauling. It's for middle class adventure wannabees (I include myself in this category).

50/50 of you have pre-March pricing but personally I'd get a decent Ford/Toyota/Chevy that'll do the job way better. Yes, you'll hear folks saying how much you save on gas, but they keep quiet about how much more insurance is (and repairs) and how public charges are shit. If i lived in the mountains, no way.

The current truck does not have a heat pump. I would wait for that, or the Max Pack, or both.

I would stick with the max unless you want the extra warranty. The extra range will always be a nice buffer especially for towing in cold temps.
Coming from experience with R1S with dump trailer & cargo trailer through the mtn's.
Resale will also make it more desirable.
You may be able to pick up a DM-Max from the shop sooner as there may be cancelations.
Note: It is highly unlikely to be 180kwh, based on calculations more likely 155-160kwh but sounds like little to no sacrifice on payload which is a plus.

Have you towed with the Rivian?
If towing within the range constraints of the Rivian I would say it tows significantly better than my outgoing 5.7L Tundra & that is with the R1S.
