I know that mooching can be a big problem, so I think they should just offer limited charging. Sounds like if people actually use it as intended, they may only use it a few times a year.

So they should totally just offer everyone like a free 1,000 kWh of charging with a purchase. That's like a $100 credit for free charging, and would amount to like 10 "fill-ups". Maybe have it expire after 12 months or something.

Depends on where you live, 1000 kW at the Tesla Magic dock in CA would be $350 with membership and $470 without it.

Would be nice to have a short trial period by geography. Being in Canada and owning since June 2023 we still have zero RAN chargers. My one trip down to Seattle zero for me to try out there either. Guess it makes no difference for Canada / Vancouver folks. There are no signs of any RAN chargers coming here anytime soon.

Guess I will not get to reap this benefit. I paid just as much as the next guy, who lives near a RAN charger. They should give some free to all owners. Most car companies give something. The lucid I had on order came with 3 years free on EA.

I agree its good for them to charge a reasonable amount for DCFC. I agree with providing a certain number of miles or Kwh free with a new Rivian but NOT unlimited free charging for any period of time. That encourages hogging of the chargers by folks charging to 100%

The price of the electricity will be either in the price of the vehicle or paid separately at the charger. Which makes more sense as far as helping sales is a marketing decision. Rivian's goal is to be profitable and there's a real cost involved. Of course, this is a moot point for most of the Northeast, which have no RANs.

Maybe they should make each new site free for the first two months or something.

Or give owners X amount of free kWh with their R1 purchase, then charge after. There is no RAN near me and haven’t had a chance to use it in my 6mo of ownership.

I feel like that’s a fair blend. Make money on those near/regularly using it (after their free period) but still give a little love for new purchases of R1s (backdating of course; not including used/flipped vehicles) that based on lack of RAN chargers built near large numbers of owners haven’t received ANY free charging.

I am good with them charging. Being in midwest I haven't ever seen a RAN and 99% of my charging is in my garage. Change more and build more stations. Make enough money that they can justify building more of them.

But my stance is still that Rivian should stick to building vehicles and leave retail power sales to others.

Stop being so cheap. You’ve just paid $75k+ for a car and you’re crying because now you might have to fork out the cost of a cheap bottle of wine to charge your EV.

Stop being an aggressive online jerk who beats up caricatures. I’m not crying. I’m disappointed.

Also, I think your definition of a cheap bottle of wine and mine an off by a factor. I can still easily get a bottle for <$10. Charging 50% of the pack (something like getting from 20-70%, as many of us will do) will definitely be several multiples of that. Just checked the 2 EA stations I would be using soon if not for RAN. $0.48/kWh. So 50% charge will cost at least $32 before I factor in losses that I’m still charged for. I can get 3-4 bottles of cheap wine for that. And where we roadtrip most of the time, that’s closer to good meal for at least one of us price range.

That's because some states don't allow you to "resell electricity" so they have to do time-based charging as a way around.

More and more states are changing this law because of the NEVI funds. NEVI doesn’t explicitly require the change, but there’s a recognition that the prohibition on “reselling electricity” doesn’t make sense for EV charging. GA also took advantage of the opportunity to add an EV charging tax, which is based on kWh purchased. I’m sure other states have or will do similar.

Totally agree on this gas a business they need to make money, especially in this environment. And also increase foot print as a company

Exactly this! Many of us will feel zero impact from this move.

What I mean is, it would only cost Rivian $100-$200. So yes, a $300-$500 credit for customers, but it would only cost Rivian ~$100.

From a business perspective, I’m cool with this. We’ve all had a good run of free charging from them but I’d rather they made some $ and rolled out more chargers (or working tonneau)!

Yes - but some us live in areas no where close to RAN. Would have preferred they give all owners certain amt of RAN.
