I’ve read through (most of) the super thread on the Dodge Ram 2363 wheels - one thing I haven’t seen conclusively answered is whether the wheels have sufficient weight rating for our trucks…

the Dodge they came off of has a GVWR of about 6,500lbs from what I could find; curb weight of our R1 start at 6,800 and go up from there with GVWR of 8,532 lbs. Many things go into this overall rating of course, so it’s possible the wheels are strong enough, but I’m trying to get some comfort that the 2363s are adequate for our trucks before I buy a set!

edit:
Called local Dodge dealer - he said he didn’t know of weight rating for that wheel and wasn’t even sure he could find one - apparently no system similar to load index for tires. He did say that wheel has a history of cracking in off-road use, so he recommends steel wheels to his customers and downsizing to a smaller rim. Obviously that won’t work for our trucks as we need calliper clearance…

Yeah, you definitely want to do your research. Just as not using winter tires in adverse/snow conditions could potentially have you liable on your insurance;
If a non-OEM wheel were to (I assume rarely) fail and it was not to specified capacity, you could be on the hook for costs related to an accident.
Same thing for an under-spec load capacity tire.
(I saw a local guy selling R1 aftermarket wheels with an under-spec set of new tires. Useless to anyone wanting to be safe.)

The only way around that here is to have a certified inspection facility inspect the vehicle and state that any modifications you have done are safe/approved.

This is something I've been digging for now a while and haven't found. While it does concern me, I'm happy to take the risk. I'm putting AS tires on the Ram wheels and will likely put AT back in stock to use those as my off-road set instead, moving AS onto my current Ram set in spring. I think I've some pretty good juju built up and ready to risk it for the biscuit till then ?????

I saw a local guy selling R1 aftermarket wheels with an under-spec set of new tires.
What's considered under-spec?

(I don't have my R1 yet) But HERE's an example from another forum member.
You have to look on your own truck.

So if you have 21's for example they are a 116/XL capacity tire.

I tried giving you benefit of the doubt, but you've some catching up to do...

You're referring to this:
I don't see 116/XL anywhere there, do you?

What was the size on your stock/factory tires? Some report 116, a few OG gangsters have 115. (Ignore the XL, that isn't as important as the 115.) Load index is based on GVWR and the higher GAWR, which is rear for us. Do math and report back.

Thank you for your service ?

Yes that sticker does not have the weight rating, mine came with 116 but logically speaking based on these stickers the max axel rating is 4960, theoretically if you went as low as 113 you are still above the max, 113 is rated at 2535 per tire, 5070 per axel. I can’t find anything saying you need to have a buffer for uneven loads.

It would be interesting to know why they started at 115 (2679 lbs) and then went to 116 (2756 lbs) when they exceed the max axle rating by 398 and 552 pounds.

Seems like the R1s and R1T have the same max axle rating.

Coupled with the door sticker, it starts on page 240 in the R1T owner's manual, along with the math. Sure it relates to tires, but I'm guessing Rivian didn't know people would put a used $50 2008 Dodge Ram wheel on their $70K trucks. I mean the gross weight of the R1T is only 2000 lbs more, what could go wrong with a used 16 year old wheel?

My dude, I can appreciate your snobbery but you aren't showing any math and just mouthing off. You didn't provide any load index or load range for what you saw, you just say "it's less than the door jam/manual" which neither specify an actual rating. I don't know where you pulled 116 load index and XL load range from (this just means higher compression than SL, still only 4 ply) but others here have done plenty of maths and added safety buffers to determine appropriate load index.

Keep reading the manual, and it shows the original 115 load index as an example (not the minimum, not a requirement, an example). Even your quoted page is just a bunch of XXXs and an algebra formula for determining max payload:

Let's just pretend they don't meet weight ratings, because they're ugly AF and make our Rivian's look cheap.

Problem solved!!

(that's just like...my opinion man)

Let's just pretend You don't own a Rivian, and your opinion doesn't count, because they look GREAT and beefy.

Problem back on!

(That's just like... A fact man)

And that he isn't on this thread looking for better alternatives than his 21"s so he can buy more than one tire.

??

I'm a bit confused, as I don't see anywhere that this post is explicitly for 21" wheels?
And the fix is easy--get 20s with 275/60R20s on them. There are probably almost a dozen now that have been identified to fit our vehicles.

That said, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Your baby is ugly too, by the way :D

Your words, not mine ;) I think most are looking for 20" for the tire availability not the looks

My opinion, the 21s aren't very attractive with or without the covers. But I have 20s and am just shopping for a cheap winter setup
