I feel like we just got this feature, where setting the cruise control would automatically set to the speed limit (if you enabled it in settings). Now, the feature is gone? It seems to only be available on Driver+ enabled roads, which kinda defies the point. What a weird change

Yes, they changed it to only work on divided highways. Because they aren't actually reading speed limit signs it's slightly "safer". I had a couple instances where the speed limit was lower than the truck thought and when enabling cruise the speed increased unexpectedly. It'll still do that in a construction zone on the highway though. They really just need to read the damn speed limit signs already.

How does the car know what the speed limits are?
I have found that the car thinks the limit is a value that has not existed for over a year after Seattle limits were lowered to 20 in neighborhood roads and 25 for arterials, if not posted.

Mapping data. Once it gets changed in the database then it will change in the Rivian.

It also uses machine vision to detect speed limit signs.

It's definitely back to reading the speed limit signs. Over the Thanksgiving holiday I was in a construction zone with the speed temporarily dropped from 65 to 55. What was interesting to me is that, about 50 yards from the next 55 MPH speed limit sign, the Rivian thought that the speed was back up to 65. As soon as I reached the 55 sign, it knew it was 55. Happened multiple times.

Yeah, the map data is *TERRIBLE*. I’ve had it try to set me at 75 MPH on I-205 in Portland.

A stretch of freeway that the regular speed limit is 55 MPH, and there is current construction that has it temporarily 45 MPH. (And “temporarily” has been more than a year now.)

The setting to 75 MPH is **especially** odd since there is *NOWHERE* in Oregon that has a 75 MPH speed limit.

Thankfully, a more recent update seems to turn camera-based detection back on.

From what I see though when it reads the speed on a sign it only stays at that number for either a short distance or short time. There is a road near my house that is 45, it drops to 40 for a bit, it will see the first sign, change the dash to show 40, then goes back to 45, sees the next sign of 40 and does it again.

I have not paid enough attention to see if it is distance or time based but it needs to be adjusted so it stays until it sees the next speed limit sign.

The yellow or orange speed signs can work above as they are designed as temporary construction or work zones but the white ones should be sticky values.

Yep, I’ve seen the same. On different roads, it’s different lengths of time/distances, so I don’t know if it’s either time or distance based, or if it’s some coding in the underlying map. It seems to always keep the “camera read” limit at *least* through the next intersection on city streets, even if that next intersection is quite a distance away.

Yellow aren’t legally-binding, they are “advisory”, so not obeying them is “fine.” Orange they absolutely should obey. The one stretch of under-construction highway I was referring to actually has a white semi-permanent speed limit change, rather than the usual orange construction zone one.

No chance my truck reads speed limit signs. It’s always wrong if the speed limit has been changed.
It used to work and then was broken for several updates. It started working again in 2023.42.1, you should check next time you are out and about, there is a road I am on frequently that I was able to confirm it is working again.

Interesting. I’ll check when I drive down that road again.

I noticed that speed recognition was improved for me as well, but after some trial and error I seemed to confirm to that OCR wasn't at play. Theoretically if OCR was being used, it should show every speed it recognizes on the dash. This is how my RAV4 worked. My Rivian still only works 50% of the time, and after digging into the map data, it correlated with road nodes that include speed data.

My assumption is that Mapbox may have absorbed some more complete speed data from a secondary source, or something.

I’m strictly going by the speed sign on the dash, drive by a school zone it drops to 25, there is another road that is 45, drops to 40 and changes as I pass the sign. They change back to what they were in a short distance, sometimes sooner than it should, but clearly mine reads and adjust to the signs.

I have not used drive+ or cruise control with this update so can’t commit on that behavior.

It absolutely does, or should. There is a small side road I drive down frequently. This road parallels a state highway that has a speed limit of 50mph at the point the two parallel. The posted, and mapped, speed limit on the side road is only 35mph. My in-vehicle navigation tells me the limit is 35mph for the entirety of the road, except for the portion after I pass this sign:

Rivian R1T R1S Set to speed limit feature already gone?? 1702073258794

As you can see, the speed limit is on the left, and clearly not intended for the road in question. Yet my truck reads this sign and the in-vehicle nav tells me the limit is 50mph. This change happens within a few feet of the above sign every single time I pass it. The only exception to this behavior was when the sign detection was turned off for a few updates few updates (2023.34 and 2023.38). Since it was restored in 2023.42, it has reverted to telling me it is 50mph there.
