I notice that often when I go to a 200 KW charger I'm not getting anywhere near the capacity I expect in a fast charge. Best I've gotten is 83 KWH at an EvGo near me.

I got that by punching it in to nav and driving there. But jeez, it seems like there ought to be a way of telling the vehicle to prepare for fast charing. An option in the shargine screen on the center display that says... basically, "prepare my battery to accept fast charging"

Or have I missed some magic key combination to force the car to doe that?

That’s likely a problem with the chargers not your truck. When the battery is cold and doesn’t have adequate time to pre-condition you usually hit a limit at about 20kw until the pack is warmed up.

It will absolutely precondition. You have to make sure you navigate to the actual charger, not the address of the neighboring location. Also, MANY chargers don't provide anywhere near the advertised rate...

In my experience, Rivian nav. is missing a good number of fast chargers, so if you want to navigate to one of those, you are out of luck. Hopefully that improves with time.

Funny you posted this, today I used the Rivian nav to get to a fast charger. A message popped up saying battery would be prepped, as I got close I heard a weird sound, thought it was the Ac. I got to the EV go station and the speed of the charging was going faster than I had seen before. Only have had the truck for 2 months so this was all new.

Yep. That's how you do it. Tesla's will tell you," next time navigate to the charger for faster charging". Rivian is not kicking this message to his driver's (yet), but once you're used to it, it is a pretty simple process.

I realize that. But why can't we have a button to just precondition the battery pack?
I've found pre-conditioning makes it hit peak then drop off faster, overall it charges at higher kw for longer when I do not pre-condition, this is due to the thermal mgmt of the battery pack not being able to cool off once it's hotter.

In warm or cold conditions?

typically warm I’ll see if I make the same drive this winter!
I've experienced the same in warm conditions, I found it best to Not precondition sometimes, especially if trying to use 350kW chargers. But I've also found 150s or RAN 200s are my new preference.

I'm going to say 100% this is the charging station and not the vehicle unless you just jumped in and headed to a fast charger with it being around freezing outside. Just stopped off at a RAN on my trip and it said pre-conditioning but I didn't see the battery change in temp at all from about 70 degrees. Plugged it and it ramped up within minute to 180kw then over 200kw after a couple minutes. I pulled in with less than 5% so I think it would have been faster at the start if I was closer to 20%.

I do what I want
I just went to a DC fast charger that is 5 miles from my house. It was 45 degrees outside and the battery showed 48 deg. I went through the navigation system and selected the EV Range DC fast charger as a destination. The R1T did not precondition the battery. It took 11 minutes at the fast charger to go from 20kw to 175kw. A total of 36 mins to get 62kw.

They need to add a button to tell the vehicle to precondition the battery. It's a pretty simple enhancement to their software. I am mystified why they haven't already done that.
