I know Rivian say no chains on 20inch….but has anyone tried any chains or snow socks on the 20inch wheels?

Yes it's been discussed a few times here. You can search for the threads but I think the summary is that you should only use chains on the rear tires and keep the suspension normal or high. Based on other experiences posted here I bought a set of chains for my 20" ATs (though I've never used them). They also help in states with mandatory chain use for mountain driving, even though AWD vehicles are often excluded - that's not a conversation I wanted to have with an enforcement officer who has never seen a Rivian.

thanks. I see you went with Peerless - did you put them on and if so what was the clearance like (I presume rear wheels?).

Where are you located? For Washington state, autosocks meet the chains requirement

I don't know about folks' experience with tire socks, but using them on a paved road for any amount of time tears them up. A few miles, and holes appear.

So unless you're in an area that's completely covered with snow all the time (during use of the tire socks), I wouldn't recommend it. When I head toward the ski resorts, a lot of the area is plowed relatively well. A heavy vehicle like a Rivian would eat up those socks even quicker probably.

My suggestion for anyone who lives in an area that needs to worry about snow or ice is to switch to 275/60R20 tires for the winter, preferably real snow/winter tires.

Then, when needed, you can use chains without worrying about them rubbing since they are the same size as the OEM 21 or 22 tires that are able to use chains.

I ordered studded Nokian Hakka LT3s in the usual size for the 20s. The socks are just to meet a legal requirement for me, I doubt I'd ever actual use them given those tires.

To resurrect this post, having done some heavy, wet snow driving this morning on some FSR's I decided rules be dammed on the 20's and ordered the SZ468 Super Z-8. Will report back mid or late week on how my fenders faired.

As you can see in the last two photos, I didn't have enough momentum to make the bend initially, and ended up backing, or more accurately, freestyle sliding back to the base. But Rivy doesn't give up, I took the road less traveled and made to the gate at the top despite the piss poor wet snow.

+1. This is what I did. It also means I can use one of my 21” wheels as a spare for the 20” set, and vice versa. Range with the 275/60r20 is better than 275/65r20, too.
