Some of us feel nuclear is a viable part of the EV transition puzzle. Here is a promising first step towards fortifying the electric grid for the future by building smaller regional power plants.

"Unlike every commercial nuclear reactor in the country, Hermes will not be cooled by water, but by a molten salt mixture that captures heat produced by fission.

While traditional water-cooled reactors require huge plants whose systems often operate under extreme pressure, the coolant in Hermes will stay liquid at high temperatures and low pressures, making the reactor design safer, more compact and more energy efficient.

...
Hermes will not create power for the grid, but rather demonstrate the affordability and safety of the novel technology at a small scale. It is one step on California-based Kairos Power's path to commercialize the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor at full scale."

Just construction permit, not operating, that comes later if ever.

A separate application for an operating license and subsequent NRC approval will be required before Kairos Power can operate the Hermes demonstration reactor in accordance with the two-step, 10 CFR Part 50 licensing process.

The Count okay with nuclear but this non-water-cooled reactor no help with three phase electricity at The Count's workshop.

It's about time. Molten salt reactors are not self-sustaining and have an almost zero risk of meltdown. Since the 70s, public opinion has turned against nuclear power, which has caused us to keep old designs online far past their designed usability dates and forced us not to bring new and much safer tech to the market in that area.

Additionally, the amount of nuclear waste from a reactor is minimal and can be easily stored. Reactors running for 30-40 years still hold the spent fuel on-site, and the amount is small enough to do that. Not to mention, coal plants release far more radiation than nuclear plants do. Nuclear is the way forward, and we need to start getting these plants online to phase out fossil fuels.

molten salt has been working for some time in solar collector farms to produce energy.
