I believe you need to be staying/paying for lodging at Under Canvas to use the chargers?

I’ve done white rim a few times on a motorcycle in a day. How long does it take in a jeep/ truck?

Yes, if following the rules you do need to be a guest. There was another R1T that used the UC charger and wasn't a guest but they cleared it with the staff before charging.

You could do the whole trail in a long day with a suspension modified truck to allow faster speed without shaking apart. I wouldn't plan on that in the R1T. Two would be better but still long, bouncy days. Three is a sweet spot if you want to enjoy the scenery and side hikes. The stars at night are something else ??

On a side note, has anyone done the drive from vegas to Moab? Contemplating that with a dirt bike in the bed in April.

I believe the Green River charger is the only hi speed charger nearby Moab still?

Correct.
Supposed to head to White Rim on the permit next week for 3 days but the weather isn't cooperating. Really wanted to add White Rim to the Hells Revenge that I have already done to see how the range plays out.

There is a high speed charger (EA) Charger in Salina Utah.

If you're in Moab, Monticello is about the same distance.

2 days at least, 3 would be ideal. You probably can do it in a day with a well modified Jeep but it wouldn't be a whole lot of fun. If you want a one day trip that's relatively easy, check out 7 mile rim and chicken corners.

Thanks, I've done all those rides on dirt bikes and have passed many slow moving jeeps over the years.

Has anyone done this trip more recently? Should be much easier now that there is a Magic Dock Supercharger available in Moab...

I’m actually planning this trip for June this year—I’ve got an April/May estimated delivery and already have the White Rim overnight permits. There’s a Rivian L2 charger at the nearby Under Canvas glamping site near the trailhead we’re planning to utilize to get to 100% SoC.
Did you run White Rim in your R1T?

I live in Moab but I haven’t done White Rim in a Rivian. I have done it on a bike and tooled around earlier this year in a Bronco Raptor from Potash Rd to just past Musellman Arch. It’s a good idea to bring a SPOT or other satellite device if you solo this but it would be much smarter to go with another vehicle.

Here is my general analysis breaking down the paved vs unpaved sections and the estimated energy requirements as I have a pretty good idea of the R1T/S efficiency off road in Moab.

This is assuming a clockwise route dropping down Shafer and coming up Mineral Canyon Rd.

Tesla SC to top of Shafer: paved, 30 miles with roughly 2k ft gain

Heading back from Mineral Canyon Rd/313 intersection to Tesla SC: paved, 23 miles with roughly 2k ft loss

So that’s 53 miles of paved driving where you should be able to do 2 mi/kwh if you’re not driving too aggressively.

Paved usage: 26.5 kwh

For the unpaved section since White Rim is 100 miles and the paved section is 8.2 miles that leaves you with 91.8 miles of unpaved driving with ~7k feet of gain(and loss).

So if you are using 26.5 kwh for the paved driving (which could be more or less depending on your load and tires etc) that leaves you 128 (large pack usable kwh) - 26.5 (paved usage) = 101.5 kwh for the unpaved section.

This works out to 101.5/91.8 ~= 1.11 mi/kwh on the unpaved sections.

This should be doable as much of White Rim is pretty cruiser terrain for a T or an S with AT tires. When nobody is out on some parts of these roads (like in Feb) you can do 50 mph no problem ?. This doesn’t even assume minimal climate control usage so keeping all that off could help a bit.

I would definitely drive around on some of these similar roads around Canyonlands or near town like the stuff near Dubinky Well Rd and like someone suggested Kane Creek to Hurrah Pass (basically most of the way to Chicken Corner) and see what kind of efficiency you get given a certain amount of elevation gain with your setup. If you had to do an interminable amount of super rocky climbing you can get much lower than 1.10 mi/kwh but from what I recall much of White Rim is pretty “non-technical” so if you averaged 1.2 that gives you a 25 kwh buffer.

Also, I’m assuming normal tire pressure. I rarely air down on easy stuff like this and I’ve seen a lot of obstacles where you might think it is necessary but it’s not. If you air down you can definitely assume worse efficiency. Play around and see what you get before taking on the bigger route but unless you see steep sand you’re probably ok. I just know that airing down is highly dependent on the driver, the tires, and the terrain. It helps to know how to drive off road and stay smooth obviously.

I went on part of the White Rim last month. Charged up at the Magic Dock in Moab up to 95%. We got a late start and left at 11am. Stopped on Potash Road for some pics and of course stopped at many stops along the way. Followed the road to Shafer Trail and then to White Rim. Went past Musselman Arch, Airport Campgrounds A and C and past Washer Woman. We turned around at 3:30p with 77% SoC just below Buck Canyon Overlook. Didn't quite make it to Gooseberry Campground. Coming back, we went up Shafer Basin Rd through the switchbacks to Island in the Sky Rd and back to Moab. We arrived in Moab around 8:30p with 52% SoC. So I used 43% for 109 miles.

I like all your assumptions and calcs - thanks for sharing those. I have been on White Rim many times in my Jeep. I am familiar with both the route and the road quality - most is pretty easy. I will also have at least one other vehicle with me, probably 2.

I did take the R1T on Hells Revenge. Officially this is 6.5 miles (I think that is out to Huntress Arch) but add in the distance out to the TH and it is about 12 miles. I recall I lost about 35 miles of range during the entire trip. This was in 2022 before some quality updates. I don't have the documentation about what kwh I actually used on that trip. Clearly that isn't nearly as long as White Rim but it is also much steeper and slower going than anything on the White Rim.
