If batteries become cheaper in coming years, and mass production scale reduces the costs for R2, etc., it would be great if R2s have almost the same features as R1s, but be smaller in dimensions, and R1s in their turn increase power and functionality with the existing price tags.

I disagree. I love the front port. I can pull up easily even with a bike rack, etc strapped to the back of the car, I can simultaneously watch both the Rivian charging screen and the EVSE charging screen at the same time while sitting in the car, and I don't have to jump over the charge cord a million times to load/unload the rear cargo area of the R1S while it's charging.
Fair enough. Also, given 95% of American's don't/can't reverse park, I guess it makes sense.

Perhaps they could offer two charge ports; front and back? Not sure what the engineering constraint would be.

Sooo, It's a Rivian but who makes it?
I am glad there is healthy demand without need of almost any marketing but I also wish more people knew what Rivian is all about which is super capable US made EV's. Maybe with R2 reveal more people will catch on.
If these people don’t know to look Rivian up on their own, through an internet portal they call their phone, then no one can help them and an intuitive EV is probably too complicated for them.

In addition to a more complicated body, extra doors, and ports, it would also mean extra high-voltage wires. Doesn't make sense from a complexity and cost perspective.

Good point. Not a deal breaker.

I don’t think they’ve changed charging port location. Forward collision is less likely than rear. However, I can see them changing to a non-motorized charging door, or a simpler motorized one, to reduce cost.

Everyone hit it on the head with the predictions I think.

only thing I didn’t see is standard door handles instead of the retracting ones we got now.

don’t think they’ll be a truck either. Will be the small suv and maybe a car/sedan.

There are even some lots (like my son's college campus) that prohibit backing in to a parking stall. Rare, yes, but they do exist.

My prediction? It has to match the Model Y at the very least.

- 800V main battery divided into two 400V sections
- 48V architecture for non drive devices, this will flow into the the next gen R1
- Glass roof (Model Y has one)
- Charge port in back driver side fender
- Good size frunk
- No air suspension
- No BT speaker
- No air compressor (or will be optional)
- No cooled seats
- No real wood trim
- Less elaborate seat design
- No third row
- Smaller gauge cluster screen
- Still comes with flashlight in the door
- Still has heated seats (F/R) and steering wheel
- Still has wireless charger (hopefully one that actually works)

No way there would be a sedan. Sedans are off-brand and have not been in demand for at least 10 years. R2 is most likely SUV only. A small truck would be a tough sell given the Maverick tops out at $40k loaded (and is faster to “refuel”).

I agree that a small pickup is unlikely, and I think this initial announcement will just be for a 2-row SUV style vehicle. However, I do expect at least one other body style R2 in the future. Probably announced in 2025 with production starting 6-9 months after launch of the initial style.

A fastback or slightly smaller hatchback would be my guesses for the second style of R2. Differentiate a boxier R2S vs. a 2nd body so you cover similar markets to a Bronco (Sport?) and Mach-E or Edge or 2 of Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek. Or maybe R2S = 4-door Wrangler and R2(TBD) = Cherokee/Grand Cherokee that's slightly sportier looking.

Speculative but I am convinced there will only be SUV variant of R2. The withdrawn plans for public park in Laguna Beach had spaces for five vehicles. The two vans and R1s account for four. That leaves only one spot for R2. When Rivian made itself known to the public in 2018, it showed both variants of the R1. We've read of rumors saying R1S orders outpace R1T. We know the overall market demand/trend favors SUVs above all else. A Crosstrek-sized R3 is plausible, if and when R2 ramp is successful and they are able to bring costs down across the board to make a $30~$40k BEV.

charge port in the rear, not the front.
Why?
Sooo, It's a Rivian but who makes it?
Tells me there is plenty of room for growth.
Charge port in the rear doesn't make sense for towing,
Or any other hitch mounted rack/carrier.
YES. THIS ^. Forgot to add how much i dislike the front charge port on the R1. Makes no sense for a long wheel based vehicle.
What is it that you don't like? It appears that a rear port is actually a terrible location, already seeing the issues with the CT. I probably would not buy a rear charge port Suv/Truck.

Never understood this, it may be either an exhaust issue or license plate visibility concern.
