Interesting, I have the complete opposite. I always have auto wipers turned on, and I frequently can drive about a half a mile before it wipes the window on a clearly water covered window. I normally have to hit the button once after I get started to be able to see, but if I can see well enough, I frequently just go to see how long it will take to figure it out.

I WISH it had a courtesy wipe. :)

Like every other car I’ve owned, the auto wipers are not for automatically coming on when water gets on the windshield. Although this is what happens if you leave them on auto mode all the time. The point of Auto is to automatically adjust the interval based on how much it is raining at a given time. My Audi and Lexus would move the wipers one time at random times in the dry summer. The T is a bit more suspect to thinking it rained. When putting in drive, the sensors start “looking” and glare dirt etc. can cause a phantom wipe. Put wipers in off. When it rains, put them to auto.
Auto wipers does both, automatically come on when water forms on the windshield and adjust the interval based on how much water is on the windshield. The latter is not mentioned below but you’re correct on that point.

Didn't they have a fix to not wipe when entering the car so you wouldn't get splashed, which also suggests you'd leave it on auto? I leave mine on auto all the time and sometimes it wipes when I close the door (need to verify this trigger) which smudges dirt across my windshield. The rest of the time it's working as expected: rain/intensity detection.

I see a note at the bottom of this page regarding pausing the wipers. Pretty cool, I didn’t know this existed.

I agree with the smudging across the windshield. I didn’t realize why this was happening until I noticed the wiper coming on. I believe they come on when you put it in gear.
