Hello all.

I'm pickup a used R1S this weekend. It only has 1000 kms so it's pretty brand new. I searched around for info and I found checklists for new deliveries. But that isn't too helpful for major issues.

Because I'm new to the platform, I'm not familiar with any big issues that are potential dealbreakers. Are there any issues so catastrophic that I should walk away from the deal? Like the vampire battery drain for example? Is that enough of a problem?

Thanks for helping a newbie out!

If it is a QM, take it for a test drive and make sure it doesn't pull abnormally to one side or another. Many have complained of this problem with that model, and repeated visits to service centers don't seem to be helping; meaning that some of these vehicles may have a more serious problem than just alignment.

Happily, this should become pretty evident by just test driving the vehicle.

The checklist should be useful. Check for normal car type stuff. It will Vampire Drain. Expect at least 1% per day. There will be some squeaks and rattles but it's an awesome vehicle.

The checklists should still be helpful. When buying from Rivian we got a brief walk around of our vehicle and no test drive. We did get 7 days to return it if we weren’t happy, but you will get a chance to check it over closely and also drive it before deciding if you want it.

Make sure you check for alignment issues and listen for weird sounds from the suspension and steering. Roll the windows down and listen while driving slowly.

Also check that you rear hatch doors work properly!

ok, thanks. 1% per day isn't bad. I hope it's only that. So do most Rivians vampire drain?

FWIW, I bought a private party low mileage R1T in August 2022 and Rivian Service has taken care of it as if I was original buyer. It has never been an issue or even come up. No out of pocket costs as all was warranty service.

They professionally and somewhat quickly dealt with wind noise, re-torquing of control arm nuts, new wheel and tireset installation/calibration (switched to 20”), 12v battery replacement, and dorked update 42.1. The only outstanding issue is replacing powered tonneau cover but that is forthcoming, s00n.

How close are you to a RSC?

It seems that it may not be uncommon for the quad motors to have this fault. Are most people able to resolve it at the service center?

I'm only about 30 minutes away

Some report that the SC was able to correct the problems, many report otherwise. There are many more people that don't have problems than those that do, but with a used rig my mind always goes to why they are selling it... So a little extra due diligence seems prudent.

My QM seemed to operate normally. By its nature it's harder on tires, but I expected that.

RIP has a seriously flawed excessive DM bias. He isn't helping Rivian in any way with this ridiculously over the top anti QM rhetoric. My QM is amazing and I greatly prefer it for all road driving with its torque vectoring.

Mine is an early 3xxx truck and I have 35k on it. It pulled right when brand new but service center performed alignment and a software update and now it tracks as good as any vehicle I have ever had with similar tires.

How is it harder on tires? If you don't use conserve it is absolutely not harder on tires. And if you use conserve correctly, which apparently you did not, it is not harder on tires. I have 35k on my original 20"at's and will likely get 10k more.

Your anti QM rhetoric is hurting Rivian.

I am not sure if anyone has posted about the warranty coverage but the QM has a significantly longer warranty than the DM and with an BEV from a new company the value of that can't be overstated.

I would not fear the QM...infact it is all I personally would be interested in...for my use case.

1. Torque vectoring. Think about how that works.

2. Conserve mode.

3. More torque and horsepower.

All of these things give the vehicle more potential for uneven tire wear. We all know you like your QM, I did not like mine.

Maybe we leave that there?

I think DM and QM each have very valid use cases and appeal to different people in different ways. You seem to think the only answer "except for drag racing" is the DM....which is straight wrong.

Torque vectoring won't wear tires if not pushed in performance type driving. User type trait....not vehicle trait.

You overused or improperly used conserve. If anything your auto disconnect of rear will wear fronts more than my almost never using conserve. Again...user trait...not vehicle trait.

More torque and horsepower.....sure....but it only get used if you push the go pedal...again....user trait...not vehicle trait.

They all do it. There are things that make it worse like gear guard, cold weather and certain software hardware bugs. Tesla had these issues as well.
