4695 is a new battery size I’ve never heard of. Will be interesting to learn more about the chemistry, density and charging characteristics.

I have the same question - in practical terms is 800v so much of a leap forward over 400v and at what cost (financial and battery health). Charging is faster at DCFC but most people charge at home or L2 so the 10 minutes saved is not that important.

On an Electrek website interview yesterday, RJ was asked about 400v vs 800v architecture for the R2. He didn't give a super clear answer but he immediately started talking about keeping costs down, so I took that to mean that they would likely stay with 400v unless there is a way that emerges to do 800v in a cost effective fashion. He was also asked about whether the R1s would get the new batteries and on that point he was clear, that will not happen due to the physical design of the battery system being much different in the R1 vehicles.

It sounds like they are making smart business decisions regarding product direction! We should cheer this! Keeping costs down is key to their survival.

Hyundai can do this now. So can a lot of Chinese brands. There’s no reason Rivian’s car coming out in 2026 shouldn’t be able to.
Tesla claims the new NACS limit is 1000A. If cars are actually banging up against that, then they hardly need 800V systems. Current R1 vehicles would hit 430kW or so. It is a lot of heat to have to get rid of though.

The EV9 doesn't charge at a raw speed requiring 800v. The secret sauce they have is being able to push their cells really hard very deep into the pack.
I understand that, made that same observation on a thread yesterday about the CT charging curves.

Either way though 30 minutes from 10-80% is disappointing.

anyways, it was nice to see Rivian move away from their current double layer stacked battery pack since I still think that is a source of problems.

I'm a lot happier with 30 minutes than 45.

I know it's a bit off topic, that the voltage design of the EV9 large pack is such an odd decision.
