NACS extension cable is coming! This will help the issue of R2 / R3 charge port being at the back of the vehicle.

Extension cable announced by Tesla at: https://www.tesla.com/support/supercharging-other-evs#cable

Does the Supercharger cable reach all EVs?
Most Supercharger cables at NACS Supercharger sites should be able to reach your EV charge port, however, in some cases you might have to park over the line in order to charge comfortably. Avoid parking diagonally to reach the cable and try to obstruct as few charge posts as possible. Charge port locations vary by EV model, which requires cable sharing between adjacent stalls at many sites. Tesla is rapidly deploying our latest V4 Supercharger post which reaches all EVs in the same Supercharger stall. Additionally, we encourage all vehicle manufacturers to standardize charge port locations to the rear driver side or front passenger side.

We are working on an NACS to NACS extension cable, which will be available for purchase in the future.

"Additionally, we encourage all vehicle manufacturers to standardize charge port locations to the rear driver side or front passenger side", ok Rivian is doing the opposite on R2/R3, doesnt seem to make sense

I know. It would be just as easy to place the charge cable outlet at the left rear. Why not???

Front passenger is better than driver's rear, mainly because if you do have curbside charging, it would be annoying and more hazardous to have a cable run across your car and have the plug sticking out into the street.

Man how would an extension cord work for level3 charging? Aren’t those things actively cooled? If it limits charging speed what’s the point?
Honestly I would prefer Rivian move the charge port to the front passenger in all their vehicles. It makes sense for curb side level2 charging and for Tesla chargers. Most of the existing RAN chargers will work just fine, and if they eventually change them out to NACS cables they can make them longer then.

I can see Elon saying "infinite, if you can afford it." Maybe the Ramcharger should do this instead of having a generator to achieve its "limitless" range. ?

That is the dumbest idea to fix this issue, and they expect us to pay for it? why would anyone do that. And with the amount of copper needed it wont be cheap that's for sure.

I wish Tesla would just make their cords longer. They can still have them liquid cooled, accommodate other EVs since they decided to open up their network, and then everyone can easily charge no matter where their port is. Just like any ICE car can get gas no matter where their fuel door is.

Would love to see more details about this to see how they are solving the technical issues.

Longer is more expansive, I am sure they are already running their current setup at capacity even with active cooling, increasing length almost certainly means increasing gauge too. And with proposed extension they just want to pass the cost onto consumers, this is why i think its bad idea.

They are already making longer cords for their V4 stations, so they could easily swap those in for the current V3 station cords.

I travel with a J1772 extension cord if I am going somewhere I might be charging overnight and have a high-likelihood of encountering an ICEd charger (like at a hotel). I could see carrying one of these that's rated for DC currents as well for the same reason. But I certainly am not going to pay $1000 for it.
