Is the seatbelt buckled? Lifting your butt off the seat to reach anything in the back, or anything like that?
^ This. These are the conditions under which a normal R1 would shift into P on its own. If these conditions did not exist, something is abnormal. Flag it when it happens, long press your name on the center display like mentioned above. And then submit a Support/Service ticket referencing the flag. They will look at your datalogs for the flag.

Call the service number and tell them what happened and what time, it happened to me 3 times when I first got my truck, it was a faulty seat sensor, basically seeing that I got out of the seat and they replaced the part or parts hasn't happened to me in the past 7 months.
Thanks for the feedback. I also suspect it is the seat sensor. I tweaked my seat pos a bit. So far, no more auto park.

Sounds like seat sensor. Also, if your less than 130 lbs the seats sometimes have trouble. The car sometimes thinks my daughter isn't in the passenger seat. She is probably 125. Shifting position in the seat sometimes helps. All it takes is a split second to think you have left the seat to trigger a shift into park.

I'm fairly certain this is actually because you aren't applying any pedal input at long lights...with out any engagement at long lights the car thinks you may have fallen asleep or something of the sort.

I had this happen to me one time and realized the car thought I was AFK!

I could be wrong but this one instance occurred at a very long light and I just didnt press either pedal for a quite a long time... which resulted in a shift to park

Happened to me too on my R1T and the cause was carrying my cellphone in my pants back pocket somehow the seat sensors get tripped by the pressure difference and switches the car to park in stoplights.

Even if functioning properly this is a dumb feature for an adventure vehicle. Very annoying in off road contexts. And especially dumb considering that unlike ICE the Rivian will bring itself to a stop anyway in the absence of pedal input.

If you open the door in drive, you get a loud error chime and it shifts into park. There is no mistaking that you did something bad.

Never had anything like that happen before. It is a bug in your specific software. I agree with others, must be a seatbelt sensor issue. Record it and get it checked out.

I tested out what it took to upset my R1T at a stop last night. Had to be fully off the seat for several seconds before it went into auto park, and the message displayed something about using park before exiting the vehicle.

I'm not sure how I could be exiting with the door closed, but that added information certainly would have been helpful in the diagnosis of the OP's problem.

My R1S frequently shifted to park automatically during red light waits. The screen also show a message saying it is automatically parked. Sometimes, the auto park happened within 10 seconds of the wait.

Does anyway else find this feature annoying? I have to shift it to drive again during the wait. I once forgot to shift and couldn’t have the car moving quickly. The cars behind me were mad.

Is there anyway to disable the feature. I couldn’t find how.
I had this situation several months ago when my wife would drive the car. To make the seat more comfortable for her we had a seat insert to support her back. But it lifted her off the seat sensors to measure the size and weight of the driver. The Riv shifted into park, sensing a person too small to drive was in the seat.

Seems like a fault. Please open a service ticket and have it checked out. It is only supposed to go on ‘Hold’ and not ‘Park’.

Unless there's a bug, there aren't many reasons the vehicle will shift into park by itself.

Few cases I can think of:

- Sitting in Drive for an extended time. It will go into park after ~10 minutes or so. Experienced this a few times waiting in a long line.

- You are going very slow and lift your butt off the seat. For example, backing up into a parking spot and you lean a little too far out the window causing your butt to lift off. Car will go into park.

- You're stopped in Drive and you open the door. It'll go into Park.

Anything else is likely a bug.
My door will not open if I'm in D or Fwd.

I don’t shift my seat at all during stops. I merely put my hands off the wheel and feet off the break or gas. The car somehow felt there was lack of activity, so automatically shifted it to park.
Sounds like a seat sensor issue. It should never do this at a light and I have never seen it.
