Haven't left yet, 19" of powder and another 3-7 throughout the day!

According to people in the thread it doesn't take much to get down to Bishop ?‍♂. But if I run out of charge then I'm an idiot for not 'planning' better and I don't deserve to own a Rivian ?

Range loss overnight is probably ~20 miles, then a few miles around town to the different lodges and groceries. Someone above said 10% per night, it's been a little less than that, probably bc of the covered parking.
Lets be real. You are getting the reaction you are because of your title which was likely purposely chosen to invoke a reaction ?‍♂

Just so we are clear on what it takes to get to Bishop: Mammoth, CA (7881ft elevation) to Bishop, CA (4150ft elevation) is a total 42.3 miles.

I guess it's time to trade in the Rivian and get yourself a Tesla! ☮

I agree with the OP. In fact, I’ll go a little further. RJ should have had the entire RAN network built out before the IPO. RJ also should have had a fleet of mobile charging vans driving around the country helping out people who don’t know how to plan their trips. Even a few helicopters should have been dispatched. What was RJ thinking ?? So disappointed.

I bet these adapters will be on the same release schedule as the camp kitchen, the monthly data plan billing, the tonneau cover replacements, and scheduling a service visit at El Segundo.
..wait... You think Rivian is building these adapters in house???

Confused what you are complaining about. Public charging? Were you not aware EV require EV chargers, and they are not as prolific as gas stations? Rivian is a startup just building out infrastructure - was that also news to you?

The rant makes zero sense to me...adults make decisions with information, were you somehow tricked with an online video?

When my wife saw the first promo videos for the R1S "Adventure" vehicle cruising up a mountain with ski racks and a truck full of happy passengers, she turned to me and said, "I'm sold."

Fast forward 5 years, I am looking at the R1S range 'snow mode' and the 93 miles left has to last through freezing temps tonight, tomorrow, and then the trip down the mountain to Bishop. Based on the range loss I've seen the past few nights in much warmer weather, I think it will be a pretty close call and I just don't feel comfortable putting my family in that situation.

So, in a blizzard, I jump in the Rivian with my 21" All Seasons and ask Alexa to navigate to the only public J-connector charger in town...a level 2 *Tesla* box at the Mammoth Recreation Center that offers *free* charging.

Rivian navigation decides to take me the long way around on Old Mammoth Rd instead of straight down Meridian ?

I actually tried to charge at this Tesla station earlier in the day, but an R1T was charging at the only box out of 3 that connects successfully.

As I make the turn into the lot, I see a Lucid charging at one of the J-connector boxes that failed me earlier in the day. The Lucid obscures the view to the one charger that worked a few days ago, so as I plow through a foot or two of snow, I am super relieved to see the working box is available.

Thanks, I guess, for the Adventure RJ, I'm super pumped to sit in this parking lot for the next 2 hours. A sincere thanks to Elon for saving the trip by offering a working charging station for a connector you don't even use AND for offering NACS to the rest of the industry (RJ, I was hoping the adapter would be available for this trip...but we all know, by now, the large gap between Rivian product/feature announcement and delivery is really the only thing this company consistently offers).

I own a Model Y and I'm happy. We bought the Rivian for 'Adventure', once the Tesla adapter ships owning a Rivian will be a much better experience. Tesla saves Rivian.

The Tesla adapter is the primary reason I haven't sold the R1S.

It's amazing to me that the folks on this forum always blame the owner.
Myself and probably majority of the forum members here go on 'Adventure' just fine without a Tesla adapter in hand. But sure, must be a manufacturer's problem.... ?‍♂

Guilty as charged. Any mention of Tesla or Elon and the RJ fanboys lose their minds, it just so happens the title is true and there's a broader point I was trying to to make...CCS infrastructure SUCKS and Rivian will get a huge boost from the opportunity to use the supercharger network, hence 'Tesla saves Rivian'

There are lots of you never-Tesla RJ fanboys who have denigrated Tesla/Elon for years, just check the forum history. Let's see you stick to your principles and avoid Tesla superchargers...which of you will reject the free adapter?

The decision to open up superchargers to the masses has more to do with securing free money from the government for infrastructure grants, over truly just wanting to be the nice guys in the EV world.
So, is Rivian going to stay nice and not open up RAN for free money? C’mon.

I’m not sure that anecdotal evidence is going to convince OP since their posting history has consistently been overwhelmingly negative towards Rivian and positive towards Tesla. There have been enough (mostly Tesla) trolls on here that a lot of us who have been here a while are suspicious when someone seems to have a clear agenda. It’s easy enough to view someone’s posting history and this person started from the very beginning, before they indicate they purchased a Rivian. Here is a sampling, with emphasis added to some.

Their oldest post
https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...er-share-77-billion-valuation.2702/post-74283
“With Amazon's help it's possible Rivian can take a nice slice of the shipping market, but Rivian is no Tesla.”

To proposing litigation in

“Anyone considering shareholder legal action?”

To this, despite overwhelmingly positive reviews at the time
https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...month-long-vacation.13341/page-12#post-299443
“For anyone still on the fence about completing their order, take note. This product is a mess!

To just calling other posters names
https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...a-charging-standard.15936/page-16#post-346971
“…read the room, kook”

To this thread, the only one created by the OP to date and with a very anti-Rivian/pro-Tesla title and narrative.

I’m not saying this person is definitely a short seller, Tesla shill, or even a troll… but it’s easy enough for any of us to look at the OP’s history and make our own judgement call. I cannot understand why anyone who is so down on Rivian from the very beginning would proceed with the purchase. It seems like an awfully expensive and frustrating way to engage in confirmation bias.

"Tesla" is absolutely irrelevant to your trip. That's where we have problems.

I typically carry a Tesla to J1772 adapter, but have only legitimately used it a single time, and it was strictly because the Tesla destination stations at that location were set up as 48A and the J1772 was only 32, and my vehicle could make use of the 48A stations. Another time the adapter flat out refused to work on stations where a single 32A J1772 was available, so wasn't able to use it. Had there not been non-Tesla chargers there, I might have been stranded.

There tend to be reasonable alternatives everywhere with few exceptions. Apparently one of them mattered to you. But based on how you described your trip, it sounds like you actually went out of your way unnecessarily to use it. Feel free to fight that particular argument, OP.

I've read through this thread and still confused on how this has anything to do with RJ or Elon, Rivian or Tesla? Are the level 2 chargers you used to increase your safety buffer not operated by some business? What difference does it make what brand of chargers you used to power your trip?

OP, sounds like you have both vehicles available for use and you chose the Rivian... why? If it's because the Tesla wouldn't suffice for the trip then by your definition didn't Rivian save the trip?

I'm of the opinion nobody saved anybody from anything. You simply took a trip in your preferred EV had a great ski trip with your family and some EV range anxiety mixed in. First world problems!

Full disclosure I'm a bit jealous because I didn't get any skiing in this year.

I hope they open up to everyone with a subscription. Every RAN I've visited has been either empty or only 1 or 2 Rivians parked. If they can take a piece of the tax money, I'd prefer they get it over, just giving it away to programs that don't work.

So true, I completely kooked out and I wasn't on fifth chair up, I didn't snag 2 hours of pow lines, and I'm definitely not enjoying fresh lines with my son who is absolutely ripping today.

Enjoy trolling the forums boys...

So you think Elon decided to open up the SC network b/c he wanted “free money from the government”? He doesn’t have enough already? Is he in it only for the money (what are his material possessions ie house?) what would we have done if he didn't open up SC network for long toad trips? We should be thanking Tesla for superior technology and foresight. Tesla is revolutionary, Rivian and all other EVs & OEMs are evolutionary. That is a major difference
Actually, I think it’s safe to say Elon is probably only in it for the money. He isn’t exactly known for his philanthropy or kindness.

I think this thread would have a much more positive tone if Elon didn’t run Tesla. He is rather polarizing. If the thread were titled “Ford saves Rivian” I would expect a lighter tone. (Note to self: look for funnier threads.)
