Because they couldn't put it on the cybertruck
I thought I heard something in the video that a support for the RTT on the CT snapped so they couldn’t keep it on for this video.

I thought they said something about the tonneau cover on the cybertruck broke too.

A DM R1 even w/o lockers is better than a quad on rock climbs, so no shocker there.
I wonder how Rivian controls the torque applied to each wheel in the QM when crawling over rocks.

tldr; a heavy RTT bent the crossbars on the R1T
This is unacceptable from a luxury "adventure" vehicle. Such poor craftsmanship and QC doesn't speak well for the company's survival in the long-term. You can tell from the video of it bending that this was a normal, everyday usage and should never have failed like that:

EXTREMELY well.
Just got back from a weekend taking the 101 and 201 course from Offroad Consulting with the NorthEast Rivian Club. The vehicle can even spin the wheels backwards when it needs to in order to maintain traction (especially obvious on the steep downhill sections).

I'm NOT an expert, and this was my first foray into this world, but from my point of view (channeling the information I received from the instructors at the course):
1- Tire pressure should've been lower, for sure (closer to 25 psi)
2- They were trying to go too fast. "As slow as possible, as fast as you need to" is the logic beaten into my head all weekend.

Following these 2, the Rivian (without skipping a beat) simply 'figures it out' as you maintain constant pressure on the throttle. It might pause for half a second, but then just does exactly what it needs to and keeps going. It was really incredible.

Literally the only time I ever had to backup and 'try again' was because the turn was literally too tight to take onto a specific trail and I simply lacked the turning radius.

And FWIW: We crawled hills steeper with more+bigger rocks than that they displayed in the video, for sure! :)

There is a reason Rivian published static and dynamic load limits right on the product ordering page. Every material, everything made, has a failure point.

Fake news. The original premise was “is the Cybertruck a capable off-roader?” Then they admitted to bringing the Rivian along for comparison. Then we watch two dufuses with no comprehension of drive modes or tire pressure dynamics abuse the trucks (in a fun way) in the desert.

No objective comparisons were done as it became obvious that the goal was simply to make the Tesla look good. The video I saw showed the Rivian doing everything the Tesla did, but even better, despite putting the Rivian on pogo springs and using the wrong drive modes. Even awarding the Cybertruck a moral victory when it lost a timed lap by 20 seconds!

They concluded by stating the objective was to determine whether the Tesla was a decent off-roader, which it is, but it’s not as good as the Rivian.

These are not the BBCTV TG guys. These are the TG magazine guys. The TV show is no more, after yet another crash.

This is probably where EV Sportline's pricier Thule is superior, with its non-telescopic bar.
Maybe althought the rivian ones have a 250lb load capacity and the thule evo are 220

Not well if you start flying wheels, which is common on the rocks. As long as all 4 wheels have traction it works very well. In the event you fly 2 wheels, you can go foot to the floor and the truck won't move. My profile pic shows that exact scenario and the only way you could get it to move at all on that obstacle was to basically floor it and back off the throttle once it started moving...very dangerous when you're rocking on two wheels and trying to deploy 800 hp when you only need a fraction of that. They have a long way to go on their drive calibration in scenarios with mixed mu surfaces and if the QM does go away...they likely will never bother to refine it further.

Proof? I’ve seen people state this and I have never seen a credible side by side comparison of actual performance.
Proof:

Have owned both, put thousands of hours and miles on both, have put them though all the paces with other avid off-roaders.

Need more proof? Buy one of each & take them out & thrash them like we have.

Like a blind man stabbing at a moving target. With no diff to "measure" the traction side-to-side, the computer flails at "testing" the traction and trying to "guess" what it is on.

It works OK for what most people use it for, but is hopelessly defeated as soon as any precision traction is required.

So you should have video of both in the same place at the same time right? I’d like to see it to see what’s going on. Isomeone put both on rollers like Dirtcom did with the quad so it would be easy to see how each system reacts

I’ve taken mine off road plenty both in Northern California(parts of the rubicon) and all over northern Utah. Been with dual motor R1S’ and my quad and did not see this result. Driver technique mattered far more than drivetrain.

sorry about the thread jack, continue with the cybertruck discussion
