My husband and I use our phones to open the car. We use the key fob when we need to valet the car. Problem is that we don’t want to have to carry the key fob around with us every time we need to valet (we would forget to bring it with us too!)… so we have the proximity for the key fob turned off and we hide it in the car for whenever we need it.

The obvious problem here is that someone could break into the car and then find the key fob, then immediately: operate the car as an owner, find personal information like our Home/Work address in the nav… so definitely not ideal.

I was thinking if the key fob/cards could be setup to always require a pin before they work could be a solve for this issue.

Before I post a feature request on RivianTrackr, I wondered whether any of the Rivianizers have a perspective on this conundrum?

I keep a card hidden under the bottom mat inside the center console. Pretty hard to find. There are a million hiding places in this car.

tesla has a PIN to drive feature, but I think it’s either always on or not. Never tried it.

I keep the fob in the car all the time with the battery out. Two reasons for that: 1) the fob is awful as far as battery drainage, 2) keep the battery in a different place in the R1S.
Also keep a penny or a dime with the fob for easy opening.

You are brave to rely only on your phone for access. I always carry a key card as a back up.

Most of not all states need us to carry paper copies of vehicle registration. And it has the home address. Getting to that is much easier than getting it from the nav ?

My state stopped asking for registration and insurance long ago, it’s all computerized. And the license is in Apple wallet, so even that isn’t necessary. I can’t find a law that requires PAPER evidence of anything. And you can easily copy the original and obscure the address. And I register everything to a UPS box anyway, so overall it doesn’t matter anyway.

This thread made me realize that the Rivian is missing a feature that the Tesla had, which provided a backup. Any person with a phone key could remotely “start” the vehicle. If my phone were destroyed or stolen, my wife could remotely authorize a drive. So could Tesla. I wonder if Rivian could do this?

Before I went through a car wash once, I I hopped out to do something and got locked out with both my key fob and my phone inside the vehicle.
Saved by the key card in my wallet.

How is that possible? Wouldn't the Rivian detect the phone and keep it unlocked?

The address thing was certainly a secondary concern for me. Unfortunately NJ does still require the paper registration and does not yet have the apple wallet license feature.

Either way, we are currently keeping the fob and one key card hidden in the car. If for some reason my phone doesn’t work to open the door, I can call my partner who can open the car remotely from the app.

I left my key fob in the vehicle and only used my phone. With the fob’s proximity off, when I got in at home (where it stayed unlocked) the car wouldn’t go without my phone, even with the fob in it. If I grabbed the fob and pressed a button it would then work, but if not, it won’t go.
