I wouldn’t recommend Tesla insurance for anyone anymore, even on Teslas. If there are any issues, it’s impossible to talk to a person. And their rates aren’t that competitive

We had Tesla insurance for years, the rates were excellent for both the Tesla and Smart. Well, it was low when I drove a lot, since it measures your driving. My wife drives aggressively and would raise the rates, to still being reasonable, but not the huge savings. As I shifted to riding the motorcycles a lot more in winter, the rate would go up, and when I'd mothball them for summer the rate would go down. Phone calls were answered in around 3-5 minutes, though I did only need to call once. The app lets you do everything, which I greatly prefer.

Rivian insurance is a total joke. They do not answer the phone. They take days, literal days, to answer emails. Their rules are bizarre for getting a quote, and coverage. There is no way to interact with them other than phone or email. They don't have the app like Tesla. I never did get a quote, I tried for weeks, even from before buying the Rivian. Oh right, they wouldn't quote be at all before buying.

Don't focus on a specific discount for any ADAS features. That's a gimmick. Just get quotes. I ended up with Progressive for the Rivian, and the rate is stupid low. They didn't care or ask about ADAS or much of anything really. The rate is $572 for BOTH cars, for six months. That's with 100/300 liability and uninsured, $1k deductible, no glass. The glass coverage is a killer on this car, every company nearly doubled the rate. So I put protection film on the windshield and I'll run the risk myself.

Also don't make the mistake I did of involving humans. I tried contacting the insurance quote services that pair you with agents. They are annoying, and useless. Every one of them was much higher than online. And then, because I had talked to one, a company removed my "online only" discount and pushed me into a higher rate. Ugh. The phone calls, 20 minutes for what I can do online in 5. Never again.

i already have Tesla policy and rate is gorgeous. I’m just wondering if I should call to further decrease the rate as their policy said if you had ADAS, you can call to adjust the rate.

We have Tesla insurance for all of our vehicles, including our R1S. Rates were significantly lower for the same coverage we had with our previous insurer. I check from time to time to see if we're still getting a good deal and it just so happens this morning was one of those checks. Tesla insurance is still significantly cheaper for us and I intend to stay with them.

We have had one accident in a vehicle since signing up for Tesla insurance and the process was ridiculously simple. The accident was in one of our Tesla's, so they pretty much handled everything in-house and just let us know when the vehicle was ready for pickup after repairs. I was able to file the claim through the app and had the process started that afternoon. There were a couple of email exchanges with an adjuster after filing the claim, but at no point did I have to talk to an insurance agent or adjuster directly, and I much prefer it that way. Others may feel different and if that's a deciding factor for you, it's probably best to look elsewhere.

Just another data point, and a general comment that base insurance rates are going up for everyone. We were with Tesla, now with Connect/AmFam (Costco), and about to go through the hassle of shopping it around again after a 32% increase from the previous 6 months, or 44% YoY!

For those that understand US auto insurance better than I (a UK native), is it ok to have different cars on different policies, as long as they're all covered, one way or another? We were with Tesla, but they couldn't cover the R1T when we got it in 2022 (VIN wouldn't match), but for us it was competitive.

Yeah, it's just Nationwide. They always been that bad.

Tesla Insurance is underwriten by themselves or their insurance partners if they can't service that state.

It's even worse; you have to deal with Rivian agents, and then with Nationwide, and the set of rules they have between them. You can't do the Rivian deal direct, but the Rivian people are SO DAMN SLOW.

Here was the last email from them, which made me just duck out of trying any more. I got this on 4/24, in response to me giving them info on 4/21, which included everything they then asked for in this email. I had sent the dec pages, VINs, etc.

Good afternoon Carlos,

Thank you for your interest in Rivian Insurance Services. Our agency is filled with Rivian employees who work with Nationwide Insurance and Cincinnati Financial to help with your insurance. With Nationwide, we could look at bundling your auto policies, and with Cincinnati Financial, we could take a full bundle approach with your home, auto, and umbrella policies if you would like to see if taking advantage of the discounts would benefit you.

Due to some new restrictions placed on us, we are unable to write a Rivian-only policy. If you would like a quote for either all of your vehicles or a bundled quote with Cincinnati, I'd be happy to work on that for you! I would need to get the names of all the drivers in your house along with their dates of birth and driver's license numbers.

If you would like a quote for your home, you can send me the current declaration page from your current carrier.

If you would like a quote for your Rivian only, I would recommend looking at Progressive or a company similar that will write a stand-alone vehicle policy. When your renewal comes, if you want to give us another chance we would gladly try again and welcome the opportunity to do so. We are working to solve the option of being able to offer insurance for a stand-alone vehicle and to find a price-competitive carrier during times of a hard insurance market.
Thank you again, and if I can do anything for you moving forward please let me know.

Stay Adventurous,

Mark Eldredge

That sucks. I also went with Progressive. They gave me a lower rate than what Nationwide/Rivian Insurance quoted when I bought the truck.

Had my model X totaled in an acciden, Tesla insurance paid me 12k above KBB price, since we also have a model Y I added the R1T to the Tesla insurance, with my accident and the one my wife had a year ago they were about 1/2 the price than any other company.
Yes, itā€˜s hard to get someone on the phone but if you need to file a claim on the Tesla app, you’ll get an adjuster’s phone number and that should do it.
itā€˜s not like I’m calling them to wish them good morning so I could care less them not having a huge call center.

I have it. I had it with my Tesla and it was way cheaper than others in California. I added my R1T to the policy in 3 seconds and it was also the best rate I got for that when shopping around. I’ve called a couple times, just with questions, and they answer the phone relatively quickly. Good to hear others have had success with claims.
