Hey all, occurred to me that I could condense my 5th gen 4Runner and Tesla Model 3 Performance into one vehicle in the R1S. I wfh, wife stays home, 90% of our driving is within a 10 mile radius with odd road trips that will require charging 1-2x/year. I do love to wheel and camp, so planning on getting good use out of our incoming R1S to that end as well.

With a toddler and large dog in tow, im trying to get a feel for whether I’m absolutely stupid for rolling the dice on the R1S as our sole vehicle? Will be on a 3 year/12k lease and at this point 50/50 on buying it out at the end. I’d prefer not to but could add a second car if absolutely necessary.

My tesla bricked early on a 12v battery issue but has otherwise been trouble free, same obviously goes for the 4Runner. Am I in for it fam? Rivian service center is a 20 mile/40 minute drive from me.

Just trying to get an early feel for what to expect, recognizing the bias of posting on this forum aside I know there’s probably a silent majority that have had nothing but great experiences. Give it to me straight y’all.

I only have an R1T, and a bicycle. No toddler or dog though I do really like scratching dog ears. Young children have cute little feet. We played this game of smelling their feet and saying P U! So I think the toddler and dog are fine. The toddler will still be fun after growing up. One of my no longer a toddler sons has an R1S. The R1S is cool. He sleeps in it (because it is way quieter than a tent) after a day of rock climbing.

It’ll be fine - had my R1T 18mos and only had one similar 12v issue. Might have to plan more for camping and off-roading, but similar to your current M3. My Land Cruiser now feels like a dinosaur fwiw ?

Should not be an issue, I’ve had my R1S over a year very happy with it. You can always rent a vehicle if something comes up.

R1S has been our only vehicle for over a year now, no problems and no regrets.

It's like any other vehicle (BEV or ICE). Sometimes you get snake bitten and the car has issues that cause it be at the service center. Even before Rivian, we've always been a 3 vehicle household. That works out for our needs, YMMV.

I'm just not a huge fan of not having things in the event of an emergency. Same attitude when it comes to lease v buy. I'd rather finance what I can afford for a few years and own it outright than just rent it. I also wouldn't have a single vehicle, EV or ice.

Its a great idea honestly. It will use a bit more electrons than the M3 but it will save you on insurance and gas (depending on how much you use the runner). Rivian really hit a home run with these vehicles and I love mine even more every time I get in and drive it.

There are some things your M3 has that the Rivian will not such as the arade, theatre, and remote viewing sentry mode options. Eventually once the adapters go out Rivian will have access to Tesla superchargers too so that is not longer an advantage for Tesla I suppose.

According to Wassym the video streaming apps should drop sometime this summer. Will have to see...I know they have been working on that for close to a year.

You’ll be more than fine. If you’re taking a long road trip I’d rent an ICE vehicle to avoid the specific headaches EV trips bring (& especially so while awaiting a Tesla charger adapter), but otherwise you should be good to go.

I just have my R1T and bicycles - and after almost a year my luck finally ran out and I had to leave my truck at the service center for its first slumber party. They gave me an R1T loaner while they fix mine so I cannot complain!
