YouTube App and Google Cast video streaming coming to Rivian infotainment system

To all the complainers, take the WIN guys. This is great news.

Some wishing to be able to stream stuff on the rear screen while driving for the kids. Are you serious? That's a horrible angle and useless. Same like on the model X.

These are the same group of folks that'll whine about how rivian won't pay for a chiropractor.

Just use a tablet with pre loaded content and hang it on the seats like what others have said. Much more practical.

Rivian needs to ditch crApT&T. It's terrible. Telsa uses crApT&T and it's really bad.

We have TM on the personal phones Verizon on the business lines and they both work way better in remote areas, not to mention much faster 4G LTE and 5G.

Kudos to Rivian for the progress. Exciting.

Not complaining, just asking: can you google cast from AppleTV+ as well, or cast home videos from the iOS Photos app?

I am not an Apple user, but we have Android TV native to our TV and my wife has casted videos from her iPhone via the Photos app.

I don't know how it "would be almost useless" if it also "worked and kept my son engaged...". If it let us throw a show on for my kids when we found ourselves out and about without a tablet, I'd be happy to have the option.

I mean, he's 3 years old. He doesn't even know what he's really even looking at and I prefer not to have his neck slumped down for hours at a time on long road trips.

That's all, really. I now can toss up an old iPad so he's looking straight on. Much larger screen and I can stream anything I can since there's a hotspot.

This is cool. Hopefully next is a native YouTube music app or the ability for a casted YouTube music app. (Not just starting it on your phone but full app functionality on the screen like changing playlist and such)

Google Cast = 100% coverage for mobile devices
AirPlay= 56% coverage for mobile devices (in the US)

I agree that this gives the most overall coverage and is a good first step. Missing from your stats is that it provides 100% coverage to all of the Android OS and any apps on it, but only partial coverage for iOS via specific apps (zero for the OS). Also, the percentage of Rivian users with iPhones is higher than the national share for iOS according to Rivian themselves. I’m guessing more info is coming soon around Apple, hopefully including AirPlay and Apple Watch as a key.

Kids of a certain age do want to see their content on that back screen. Its about their ability to influence and control part of a shared experience.

For example, take your ipad and glue it to a cardboard box painted to look like a PC or old TV, they will all crowd around that one ipad screen, which doesnt make any sense. The TV on the wall is bigger, better and they could go and get another device to watch the same thing privately, but they dont. Goes against logic I know, but its what they find fun.

This is because your TV also supports AirPlay. Apple does not support Google Cast natively from any of its own apps just like Google does not support AirPlay natively (iOS can AirPlay any video/audio unless the app developer specifically blocks it). Apple Music, TV+, Photos, etc will not work with this unless it secretly also has an AirPlay server built in.

There are third party apps that claim to do this by intercepting the whole screen, but I don’t know how well those work and wouldn’t trust them by giving permission to record my screen.

I've noticed this too living in the mountains and I suspect that the cell antenna on the Rivian is far superior to the tiny antenna on a typical cellphone thus allowing for better coverage.

I wonder if casting a browser will work, that might open up more options like A Better Theater but for me I'd still prefer to be able to cast offline synched content from Plex or Fuse without requiring the AT&T connection.

What I find amusing is the FM radio antenna is so bad that I wonder if its even connected. But, the Cell Antenna is excellent and often has signal when my phone has no service (AT&T for the phone as well).

I am not an Appleite either, but I firmly believe that Rivian will make this new feature available to both major platforms.

This is a great thing for Rivian. This is going to make Rivian the EV to have.
