Some sealants are liquid foam. So, when you squirt it in through the tire inflator, the foam quickly fills the entire rim and supposedly seals the (small) hole.
The problem I hear from tire shops, is that when you take off the tire to repair it properly or just to replace it with a new tire, the foam is stuck to everything including the rim!
A lot of tire shops won't clean it, you might have to do it yourself.
