Some sealants are liquid foam. So, when you squirt it in through the tire inflator, the foam quickly fills the entire rim and supposedly seals the (small) hole.
The problem I hear from tire shops, is that when you take off the tire to repair it properly or just to replace it with a new tire, the foam is stuck to everything including the rim!
A lot of tire shops won't clean it, you might have to do it yourself.

Sorry dude. Needed to buy one with a spare. My non negotiable when I got mine in June 2012. Yes, a year ago.
I'd never buy a car without a spare... Wait... Bought a 2018 M3 that had no spare .. But I wasn't going to tow with it ...
Cheers

Sorry this reply is delayed.., just had to flame this...
True!
Ordered the spare with the R1S, but it was removed from the build before delivery, saying I could buy one in the gear shop. But nope.
Still nope.

If you got the inflatable spare it should come with the tool kit to change it.

Because you're a newbie and confused (nothing wrong with that btw), I would highly encourage you to invest some time to do a dry run with the inflatable spare to make sure you are familiar with how to jack the R1, inflate the spare, figure out where the flat tire might go once the spare has been installed, etc and also confirm that no vital equipment is missing. Better to figure all that out now than on the side of the road on a cold, dark, rainy night.

great idea………the biggest mistake Rivian has made is not having a full size spare in the R1S in my opinion. I USE it for off roading so it will always be a calculated risk. I never wanted the 3rd row of seats and when I ordered my R1S in 01/2020, it was an option. They could have put the spare where the 3rd row is. Very disappointing. thanks for the good advice and we will do that dry run. Best, JB

Is there any SUV that comes stock with a 34" spare? The only option would probably be a swing-out hitch like a Wrangler. Under the car affects departure angle and aerodynamics.

I think Rivian made a good call. I just loaded my full-size spare vertically into the back for a ride today. There's plenty of room to pack recovery gear around it too. Not the most convenient for daily driving (that's what a compact would be for) but not bad for off roading.

Went out to the garage Sun am and found R1S with right front tire flat. Really flat.
Since the compressed spare was removed from my build and is not yet available in the gear shop, I have no spare.
I called roadside assistance and they said to have it Towed to a Discount Tire, and they could fix it or replace it.
They could arrange towing for $50 and $.35 per mile…

Discount Tire closed on Sunday.
Reinflated tire with garage compressor and drove it to Discount Tire on Monday. They do not have jack pucks for it, so they can’t help until they or I get Jack pucks.
So- ordered some.
Will take 2-3 days for them to arrive.

Very annoying- but what if I was out on the road somewhere?

When I learned to drive my father said never leave home without a good spare, a jack and a lug wrench.
Technically, I didn’t leave home, but…
Ugh!

@SoCal Rob has a great solution for full size spare. I'd link the actual post but I'm not very good at that. Might want to search for it. Cheers.

All Jeeps have full size spares as far as I know. I had 2 Grand Jeep Cherokees over a 30 year period and the full size spare was buried in the aft bottom of the vehicle but inside. Rivian could have done this by getting rid of the 3rd row of seats I will never use. Other Jeeps have the spare on the back of the tailgate. An “Adventure” vehicle should have a full size spare available besides taking up the sleeping quarters when camping IMO. Hopefully , they dont make the same mistake with the R2.
