The inventory turns pretty quick. Might be empty one day but then be a bunch the next. With all the lease deals, enforcing pre-order holders to take delivery of existing inventory before September is moving a lot of these. I would check multiple times a day until I found the build I wanted.

What’s the rationale for the belief that Rivian won’t let preorder holders use the vouchers on the refreshed models? Converting price lock to % discount seems like a move to accommodate allowing the vouchers to apply. I get they want q4 to be higher profit, but are they really going to wait that long to sell refreshed models?

Rivian had the option to just say that the vouchers won’t apply to refreshed R1s, but they didn’t say that.

Presumably they are cranking out R1s at a decent rate by now. Will they really hold all that inventory through end of Sept? That’s every R1 built between May 1 and Sept 30 just sitting there.

Is it normal (or perhaps, “Normal”) to have so much vehicle inventory in the pipeline?

I’m not trying to be snarky. I am just trying to figure out if I can get a refreshed R1.

They absolutely are not withholding to keep the preorder holders from buying. That would just result in lost sales which they could have done anyways. Nah, they'd want to push them to the refresh as it being cheaper to build means less of a loss from the coupon. Their email sent to preorder holders all but implied they could do custom orders by saying it's available "later this summer" and you need to take delivery September 30th ...the Fall.

Also their guidance from the earnings call requires they have significant Q3 deliveries, holding deliveries to Q4 would make their numbers impossible.

I think they want to announce it and put it on sale on the same day. That means crash testing (and maybe EPA testing) with production representative vehicles needs to be done prior to the announcement. I think the wait is primarily to help them clear old inventory and finish that testing

Inventory has been very low the last few weeks for all terrain R1S. I tried playing with zip codes but didn’t see any differences. I feel like I got the last Quad all terrain in at least California last week. I pulled the trigger thinking that the quad lease deals might go away if they introduce the rumored tri-motor. Wanted green but still psyched on glacier white over AT darks ?

It's not the same vehicle you had reserved at this point. Vouchers were so they don't have to maintain multiple versions of prices.

What is this voucher you speak of? I've been reading that Rivian is offering things to pre-price holdouts. Just curious. Cheers.

Or even more....how can they expect the service centers to handle all the PDI, corrective actions, and the actual deliveries? Talk about being slammed....
They don’t? When sales and delivery numbers matter more…

Sorry mate-that takes me to a generic R2 page. It's ok. The knowledge would probably have made me cry anyway. Cheers!
Link works fine. If still not for you, try googling “rivian.com voucher”. Basically those notified have to act by 9/30, pre-hike price difference would be applied to and shop inventory purchases or leases.

Sadly I think you are largely correct. But service experience matters to many people who buy vehicles so if "they don't" is truly the Rivian position, I can't see it helping those sales and delivery numbers.

To be clear, I’m not saying it doesn’t matter. What I’m saying is those are two competing priorities, among many others. And when they have only the resources to do just one… Chicken or the egg. Have to sell more cars to have funds to carry on, including service expansion. They reduced capex? While situation isn’t dire, I get impression they are being very cautious with spending.

I concur....Hopefully they can thread that needle to that correct amount to keep customers and future potential customers happy and comming to brand, but not too much to hurt path to profitability. Might be a real fine line to walk....that is for sure.

@Dark-Fx, Why are you upset by voucher holders getting refreshed R1s?

Rivian did not have to give anyone the initial pricing, but they did so to win customer loyalty.

Rivian also didn’t have to allow preferred pricing on dual motor vehicles or Max packs. They did so presumably because it helps their margins, making it a win-win.

And they could have said no vouchers on refreshed R1s. It would have been pretty easy to do so but they did not. (I suspect the economics are basically a wash for them, they just want to have a clean Q4 to hit profitability.)

FWIW, I opted to hold out because I live in an area where the heat pump will be nice and RJ told me at an event last year that it was coming in Q2, and I believed him. He also said the electrochromic roof, the other thing I asked about, was coming.

(There’s actually a bit more to it: I thought I’d get my R1S late 2023 after I made my deposit non-refundable in October but instead Rivian delivered only crickets. I was very bummed as the months rolled by. I could have made a fuss, but I decided I’d just make the best of it and hit pause when I still didn’t have a vehicle in February.)

I also don’t think that anyone other than us Rivian forum nerds would say it’s a different vehicle. Lots of people on this forum won’t even call it a refresh.

I’m not trying to be a jerk here. You are one of the most valuable contributors to this community so I take your view seriously. If you were a random troll, I’d just move on.

Rivian has said they aren't allowing custom orders until late summer. My guess is if they even put refreshed vehicles into the public R1 shop by/before then, anyone who wants to use their voucher will likely have to get lucky that their desired config appears there. And that is if Rivian is even producing it.

I'm mostly saying you are taking a chance here on being able to use the voucher because the timelines just don't line up well. Your vehicle has to be in your hands before the end of Q3 or they invalidate the voucher.

I also don’t think that anyone other than us Rivian forum nerds would say it’s a different vehicle. Lots of people on this forum won’t even call it a refresh.

Most people don't have a clue how much is changed after the retool (I would still put myself in this camp), and Rivian has been as quiet as possible about it. Visually, it seems less than you'd typically see from a typical OEM refresh. But there is a lot more than would be typical going on behind the scenes IMO. We know that vampire/phantom drain has been a big focus for the software folks. The hardware folks likely had their opportunity with the refresh.

Based on governmental filings, it's looking like almost everything to do with the electronics is getting an update in some manner (they may as well, since the entire vehicle electrical architecture is getting changed). Filings exist for updated door handles, Vehicle access systems, the wireless charger, and the autonomy experience module. Only know about these things specifically because they emit radio waves during operation, and they have to be tested by the FCC. The value of what those changes are to the user is still an unknown overall, but with Rivian adding a UWB radio here, you should still be able to access your vehicle if your phone battery has died. I would really like to have that capability personally. Gen 1 vehicles will likely never get that capability.

Since the AC compressor was moved, it seems likely there are other significant changes under the hood since they probably had to re-engineer all of the paths for that, so it's clearly not just electrical changes.

Other changes I've identified is some stuff that looks like it'll improve the amount of wind and other noise that gets into the cabin. The firewall/bulkhead stamping is quite different. The forward crash bar is different (likely just cost savings since it looks like it was just parts count reduction). Rivian hasn't shown enough of the rear or interior to know what else might have changed.

I think there is little chance of re-tool changes making the R1 an objectively worse vehicle. But a big chance that the changes will be meaningful. Overall I suppose it's probably worth taking the chance of not getting to use your voucher. If the changes are that big of a deal, great. If they aren't, then you could always save a ton of money buying a low-miles used vehicle.
