So you have 2 things going on:

1) The truck can receive a maximum of 48A. The the truck is selected to only receive a MAX of 42A based on your description.

2) The ChargePoint Flex in its Hardwired configuration can safely charge at 48A if it is paired with a minimum 60A breaker. On install, the tech should have set the dip switches in the charger to do a max rate based on the breaker size. If you are seeing 9.37kwh, your flex charger might only be set to deliver a MAX of 40kw.

If the truck is set to receive a MAX of 42A and the charger will only give 40A, then the truck will only get 40A.

if the truck is set to 48A and the charge point is set to a max of 40A, you will still only get 40A.

if the truck is set to 32A and the charge point is set to 40A, you will only get 32A.

basically, the truck cannot pull more amps than the charger can give. The truck can limit the amps it takes in through the software. You have a 50A breaker, so it should be set charge at a max of 40A. If it is a 60A, is should be set to deliver a max of 48A. If it is a 70A, it could be set to a max of 50A, but the Rivian can’t receive 50A anyway. The breaker is upsized to allow for the constant amperage, not just peak amperage. It’s a safety measure as it would likely cause a fire if it was improperly sized.

hope that helps
Why is the Rivian set to only charge a max of 48A? It obviously get more when plugge into commerical super chargers?

It’s not about the truck, it’s about the charger it is plugged into. House wiring is not built to handle much more than that. I think Ford has an 80A version, but that requires some large dedicated wiring and 100a breaker. Almost no one has more than 48a. It’s actually better to charge at 48a as your main charger as it is better for battery longevity:).

It is about the truck. The charger is in the truck (the plug is the EVSE) and is only 11.5 kW. Even if you threw 100 amps of AC, you would be limited to 48 amps.

Yeah good point. I guess what I am saying is the 48a limit Rivian has for home charging is what many consider the “most efficient” and best for battery longevity. Thanks for the correction. My other point is that most companies don’t offer home chargers above that limit anyway, but some do. I could have answered better by explaining that they are two different charging hierarchies. Home charging limited by both the vehicle and home connection. ✌

Since we're having this discussion, I'll weigh in with a question... I have my Home Flex plugged in with a 50A circuit and the settings on the app show a 40A charging limit. My R1S always shows 42A when I plug it in. I acknowledge what was written earlier about how the vehicle can only pull what the charger allows. However, I found that, if I just plugged in and walked away, the circuit would trip and the breaker would be wicked hot (I want to say I used a laser temp gun and registered close to 200 degrees, but that was a while ago and my number may be off... either way, it was painfully hot to the touch). Ever since then, I've been manually lowering the vehicle charge (through the screen) down to 40A and the issue hasn't come up again.

What am I doing wrong?

Could be loose connections causing higher resistance.

you need a 70 amp breaker to charge at 50 amps.
But you only need a 60A breaker to charge at 48A which is the max the truck can handle off a Level 2, anyway.
