Looking for a car seat for the R1S that allows the seat to fold for 3rd access without having to remove the seat. Does anyone have any recommendations? Safety is obviously paramount but surely I can't be the only parent with this issue.

I am skeptical that there is a solution other than just using a backless booster that isn't actually attached to anything if your kids are old enough for that.

My kids aren't old enough for that so if there is a solution I would also love to hear about it. But to me it seems like more of a problem with Rivian's design than with any particular car seat.

I'm not sure who Rivian thought would drive around with six or seven people in the vehicle, but families with carseat age children was clearly not the target audience. Which is crazy since I can't imagine anyone else using the third row in any vehicle. But it's the only explanation I have for someone designing a third row that can't be accessed if you have car seats in the second row.

I have 4 kids pretty close in age and have had every permutation of different car seats that exist. There is no such thing as a folding car seat unless it is a booster (with or without back). How old are the kids and how many? My experiences are with a Q7, Odyssey, Pacifica, and now R1S. What kind of set up are you looking to do?

I am not OP, but curious your set up? I have a 5 yo and 3 yo, and expecting twins this fall. It will be a tight fit!

I don’t think what you’re looking for exists. But I will say that the 2nd row seat can be removed. This gives extremely easy access to the third row with car seats.

My two rear seat occupants are both in booster seats but I was hoping the R1 refresh would bring a captains seat option. The six passenger Kia EV9 makes the third access nearly effortless, Rivian just needs to accept that the R1S are more often used as family haulers than off-road adventure vehicles.

I also did not think such a thing existed but out of curiosity, googled it.

Here is a back folding child's car seat that meets all the regs. It folds for portability sake but it looks like you can release the latch that allows it to fold forward (actually, the seat is folding up but its the same).

All I can say is take a look. Not a recommendation by any means.

Whatched the whole thing the other day. The wife now wants the EV9 for very obviously reasons.

The R1S lacks room up front with a rear facing seat in the 2nd row even for those not 6'5. Huge miss on Rivian's part. It's quite disappointing.

This is another good video to show how tight it is up front with a rear facing car seat.

100% agree. They didn't need to shorten the R1S that much.

I wish the Denali SUV EV was out already. The full XL size.

First of all, congrats! That will be a tight fit! A lot of things to consider. Does your wife (or partner) want to sit with the twins in the back or would she sit in the passenger seat up front?

Don’t put infant seats in the third row. You will be sweating and teaching your 5 and 3 year old curse words while you load and unload the twins.

I recommend infant seats in middle and left passenger side of second row. Mom can sit on the right hand side. This also allows the third row kids to get in and out to the curb safely and allows a parent to reach back there to help buckle and unbuckle. The challenge is getting infant seats that allow for the right seat to fold and slide forward.

Not having a memory mechanism for the second row also makes frequent 3rd row access annoying. It’d be nice to just push the seat back into its previous position instead of having to adjust the tilt and slide every damn time. ?

thanks! This actually was exactly my plan… most of the time both my wife and I will be up front, but I was thinking it would be nice to have that 2nd row passenger seat open for 3rd row access and for occasions an adult needs to sit there. May actually just leave it folded down majority of the time. We’ll have to test what’s easiest for our older 2 to get in the back…
