Seems financially wasteful for them to sell a large plus but have thousands of dollars worth of battery not used.
as for trying to shirt some inventory max packs, this seems short sighted like standard plus was. I am not a fan of short term spec/mode designation changes. Those max packs will sell, just reduce production of them now and let the inventory dwindle down naturally without going to the effort of coming up with a new pack on the website. There are too many options as it is.

Large should have stayed at the 130kwh level rather than drop down to 109 in the first place.

In regards to demand, oddly when the 2025 models first began popping up on the shop, max packs would sell almost immediately. Maybe they ramped up production of the max as a result? Now are stuck if people stopped buying.

So you drag around the larger heavier battery and don't get the range. And, the battery never gets fully charged? Rivian pays the same for the battery, but gets less money up front hoping that some number of people will software-unlock it later. I hope they know what they are doing, doesn't make sense to me.

Can someone please, share the different battery weight, capacity and pricing? I'd like to understand this better.

This information is accurate and legit - no rumor. Only thing to correct is they do not recommend charging to 100% at this time.

We recommend the same charging limits for Large+ pack as with Large pack - 70% for daily use, 85% for extended drives, and 100% for road trips.

if people aren't paying the range upgrade, down the line they they should just offer a travel range upgrade that people can just pay for like a week or a month of extra range as needed. by the end of life of the vehicle they could potentially have made more money than they would have in the initial price of the max. really has a few other benefits that can help sell that package if priced correctly.

That's actually something I'd consider depending on the price. I'd only need the extra range a few times a year, if that. Some people do the same thing with the new FSD subscription, only shelling out during road trip season.

Raw material prices have come way down recently. They likely aren't losing money doing this.

Is Large+ available now? I didn’t see any in the store or as a build option. I was considering a Max Pack, so Large+ is intriguing if I can software upgrade it later.

I believe the new large+ battery pack is a huge win for the consumer. A software locked Max pack that can be unlocked for a cost down the road.

you can pay to unlock more range when you need it permanently or degradation hits.

My fix for degradation is to start with 20” all terrains which get 274 miles and switch to 22” Sport wheels which get 300+ range as the battery wears or All Terrains wear.

10kwh is at least $1000 so depending on how much battery we are talking about it could be several thousand dollars left on the table in cost of goods.
My main complaint is that they will have four battery options, four power train options and the myriad of exterior and interior options. They need some simplification to ensure profitability.
