This.

In a perfect world, the base would be 20 inch with AS, not 22.
It's also confusing as to why they don't let you add the performance option at checkout, it would be easy money.

^^ I DO go off road on occasion, but nothing that warrants the beefier tire, skid plate, etc.
I use the off road features mainly when driving "paved" Sonoma County backroads.

I've been keeping my eye on the shop for the last few weeks - specifically on Performance Dual Max with Ocean Coast and Premium Audio. Those are the top 3 options for me.

I've seen a few come and go and almost all of them have the All Terrain package.

What gives? Is it really that popular that most people want that? Or is it just them trying to use up stock of those wheels?

The extra cost and range hit just isn't worth it to me. Anyone else notice this?

It's not an obsession. It's 100% to do with ebb and flow of supply chain, and batched manufacturing. For sake of manufacturing efficiency, they batch production in groups of similar configs. Every car manufacturer does this to varying degrees. Observe long enough and you'll see stretches where there'd be nothing but 22s, etc.

Agree, instead of losing $35K per Gen 1 vehicle, they only lose $34k.
You're Fun!

A dollar less lost is a dollar earned ?‍♂

Rather than Rivan loving to make vehicles with the off-road package, isn't it just as likely that customers are just not buying those (more expensive) vehicles as quickly.

It is possible Rivian is building 10x as many vehicles with 22's than 20's, but if the 22's are getting purchased the moment they land in the shop and no one wants to buy the 20's then someone looking at the shop will see primarily 20's.

I'm not saying it is the case that no one wants to buy 20's. My point is just that a bunch of vehicles in the shop with 20's doesn't mean that rivian is building all that many of them. They might be, but they also might not.

Part of their brand image and the wheels and tires are subjective. Some folks really like the looks. The rugged look of the all terrains and I'll have to admit that I'm one of those people. However, the range is more important to me than the looks, hence my choice to go with the 21-in road wheels.

Margin, supply availability, and brand positioning - all to varying degrees based on when and who you ask.

The Dude is grossly underestimating the percentage of people that buy a Rivian that dont go off roading somewhat ? I am not talking about rock crawling but just basic off roading. I would think it is at least 40% of the buyers> if you just want want to be able to go over speed bumps, why would you spend almost $100K on a R1S or R12? just go buy a Tesla 3 or a Prius or a Chevy Volt!!

If you are getting performance dual motor, it sort of makes sense to get it with the 22" wheels to maximize range and traction.
20’s on 275/60/20 AS tires get better range than the 22’s. My R1S large, quad, with 20’s on 275/60/20 AS tires is 7% more efficient than my T large, quad with 21’s.

The biggest reason for the range loss with the 20s is the tires. I agree the aerodynamics are worse, but that only impacts high speed highway driving and, like you said, you can mitigate it with the inserts. The worse rolling resistance of the ATs impact range at all speeds.

I second the wish for a 20 inch all season low rolling resistance option. Oh well, reducing options reduces part inventory requirements and manufacturing complexity. Simpler is more profitable for Rivian, so in the end I am OK with their decision. Because I want them to survive.
There are options for the 20’s current. 20’s on 275/60/20 AS tires get better range than the 22’s and 21’s. My R1S large, quad, with 20’s on 275/60/20 AS tires is 7% more efficient than my T large, quad with 21’s. Pirelli AS Plus 3.

I agree it's mostly the tires and Rivian does actually offer a 20 inch wheel AS combo, but sadly only with the standard pack. I personally do not want a 22 or 21 inch wheel and do want a larger battery than the standard so I am forced to get AT package when I do not plan to do much off roading and buy after market AS tires. If it were not for my voucher discount, I am not sure I would be willing to go through with the expense and hoop jumping to get the setup which is obviously one of the best for most people.
It’s not a AS tire. It’s a AT tire. Goodyear Wrangler AT tire. Not sure why Rivian advertises it as a AS setup.

Unfortunately this is not a factory size for gen 1’s and requires either new wheels or reprogramming the computer to think you have 21/22’s for that diameter. Not something the typical rivian owner would do. Gen 2 apparently has this size but none sold yet up to this point.

Well these are adventure vehicles first and foremost, so the ATs would be needed for off-road adventures these are built for. So I would say that is completely normal.
