I've been keeping my eye on the shop for the last few weeks - specifically on Performance Dual Max with Ocean Coast and Premium Audio. Those are the top 3 options for me.

I've seen a few come and go and almost all of them have the All Terrain package.

What gives? Is it really that popular that most people want that? Or is it just them trying to use up stock of those wheels?

The extra cost and range hit just isn't worth it to me. Anyone else notice this?

Range hit yes. The only OEM tires that are 3PMF rated for snow so those who drive in mins are better equipped than the other tires. When Rivian sold 20, 21, & 22 wheels, the 20s had the most available replacement sizes. The All terrain pkg also includes the underbody shield, and a full size spare...so there's actually more than it looks with that package.

FWIW the uglier 20s have inserts available from third party that theoretically can help get back some of that lost range

Also, I imagine switching to a lighter aluminum rim could also help get back some of the losses from the beefier tire

maybe a full size spare in the R1T but sadly not in the R1s though…a huge mistake by Rivian. Rivian is an Adventure company by their admittance and design. Adventure means serious off road performance which is why the AT package is popular. JB

While there's definitely profit for Rivian in the AT bundle, I think the 20" option are far & away the best selling tire combo (which is to be expected on an offroad-oriented / "adventure" vehicle).

And maybe 10% of owners are actually going to do anything remotely considered serious off-road. It’s no different than a Defender, G-Wagen, or BMW GS bikes. They’re built, capable and marketed as being off-roaders and rarely see dirt roads.

Is there really any obsession? I think it's just a matter of luck and what you are looking for. For example I searched just DM with Premium Audio and a max pack and most do not have the AT package.

The biggest reason for the range loss with the 20s is the tires. I agree the aerodynamics are worse, but that only impacts high speed highway driving and, like you said, you can mitigate it with the inserts. The worse rolling resistance of the ATs impact range at all speeds.

I second the wish for a 20 inch all season low rolling resistance option. Oh well, reducing options reduces part inventory requirements and manufacturing complexity. Simpler is more profitable for Rivian, so in the end I am OK with their decision. Because I want them to survive.

^^This is why I don't want to pay for the AT package. I DO go off road on occasion, but nothing that warrants the beefier tire, skid plate, etc. The AT package really is cool, but it's just a lot of stuff I'd pay for and never use.

That's the wired thing. There ARE options until you introduce Ocean Coast interior for some reason...

This makes perfect sense. I was just kind of curious if the AT package really is THAT popular, or if Rivian just wants us to buy it.

In the end I ended up choosing a shop vehicle without the performance upgrade, since that's the one thing that isn't a hardware based option. Fingers crossed that the OTA upgrade for that isn't like video in the infotainment... a year later and still not delivered. Just in case been browsing the shop to see if anything else comes up to switch to. But looks like that's not gonna happen.

I agree it's mostly the tires and Rivian does actually offer a 20 inch wheel AS combo, but sadly only with the standard pack. I personally do not want a 22 or 21 inch wheel and do want a larger battery than the standard so I am forced to get AT package when I do not plan to do much off roading and buy after market AS tires. If it were not for my voucher discount, I am not sure I would be willing to go through with the expense and hoop jumping to get the setup which is obviously one of the best for most people.

It's also the Premium Audio. If you didn't have to have it then you could get what you want.

The more specific your search the harder it is going to be to find. As others have said either keep watching the shop, buy it and swap the tires or custom order exactly what you want. Lots of options.

Good luck. I'm sure you'll find what you want.
