Got to appreciate Costcos that have their own pucks. Otherwise, it could easily turn into a hold-my-beer moment.

And the next time a tech says “yeah, we have the pucks”, each of us needs to channel our best Paul Hogan, pull out our jackpucks, and respond “Crikey, that’s not a jackpuck. THIS is a jackpuck!”

Edit: Fixed!

The closest Costco to me, which is in Rockaway, New Jersey was like pulling teeth to try and get tires. I called them several times over three weeks trying to get someone who understood there is such thing as a 21 inch tire and Michelin defenders are now being made in that size. When I finally got to speak with someone after weeks of trying, they told me there was only a few in their Carolina warehouse and I would have to come into the store just to order them. After all of the hassle, I ended up ordering them from tire rack and having them installed by a local shop. Same price as Costco, but only got two-year road hazard warranty instead of the five years that Costco offers. It’s a shame, because the install cost me $220 and I missed out on a $60 promo that Michelin is running, but in the end, the local shop was able to do it when I needed them too, instead of having to jump through hoops, in order to give Costco business. I also miss out on free tire rotations, but I am 35 minutes from Costco anyway and it’s a zoo there any day you go, so I’d much rather just do the tire rotations myself in my driveway.

Hey guys,

I just wanted everyone to know that even though Costco does not have it listed, you can go to their tire department and have them call Michelin directly, they will ship the 21 inch Defender tires to Costco, and you can get them installed with the Costco warranty!! I just ordered a set of 4 tires. My Pirelli's lasted me 34K miles, but the Defenders are better rated with a 70K warranty from Costco. They are also $110 less per tire compared to the Pirelli's.
Already a thread on this.

remember almost all iPhone, MacBook are made in China. That's one of the reason Apple gets such a high profit margin and rich.

Forgive my ignorance on this subject, but are pucks required for any lifting done on Rivians? Aren’t they put on a normal hydraulic lift at Costco? Wondering more for getting my vehicle inspected…if they have to put it on a lift.

Costco a few weeks ago instructed all tire centers to order a set of pucks for the Rivian as well but for now bring your okw

There have been several threads about the Michelin 21s. I got mine from Discount Tire and they matched all the costs (tires and installation) from Costco. And they’ve worked on all my cars and I trust their work.

Rivian recommends one of two options:

(1) Use Rivian-specific pucks at the approved support points; OR
(2) Remove the underbody plastic panels and lift under the frame.

Since the plastic panel connectors are easy to damage when mounting and dismounting panels, nearly everyone seems to use the approved support points.

Apparently there are visible parts that LOOK as if they should support the vehicle, but Rivian doesn't recommend this because they aren't designed for support and could be damaged when lifting by them.

I hope this helps, @McLovin! Very best wishes!

Thank you and congratulations on the R1S!!

All of our original aluminum work was done in the US. Unfortunately, the US gave up commercial production of high energy and high temperature NdFeB magnets a long time ago, so it's all off shore unless you are aerospace or DOD. They are restarting the only two mines in N. America, so all raw material is outside sourced at present for all commercial applications.

No manufacturer uses USA based NdFeB magnets or cases, regardless of what anyone states. I understand the field, as it was one of my areas of expertise in college. My college class mate runs a factory in Hong Kong, so he produces everything for me. If you can't supply cases in America or NdFeB magnets with the performance I demand, then you go off shore.

We offer the highest energy magnets with the highest temperature rating, period. My Rivian has more than 100 components from China, including all of the suspension control arms and wheels. It's a global economy for good/and or bad.

Hope that clarifies. You can't buy a puck from anyone that doesn't use SE Asian magnetics and cases, because there aren't any that wouldn't drive the price up considerably (if you could find them).

Back to your regularly scheduled channel. Rivian 20" Wheel Below.
Thank you for this explanation. You just made me return the pucks I got from Amazon and purchased a set from you.

How's the tire noise vs the Pirelli's? I'm assuming you were running the stock 21" Scorpions before, right?

My local Discount Tire does road force balancing. Interestingly I asked them about alignment and they said they don’t do Rivians or German cars either. Tire Kingdom said they can align both. Cost is $110.
